Descendants of Humphrey John or Humphrey Morgan

includes the line of Edward Roberts of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania

Compiled by James Quinn, Historian, GGwynedd Friends Meeting, December 2007. Includes two of the lines covered in Howard Jenkins book "Historical Collections of Gwynedd." A lot of the comments for the first three generations are from Clarence Roberts' personal genealogy, written in the 1940s, which is in his book found at the Historical Society of Montgomery County.

Revised November, 2009.

Note: The Edward Roberts line (m. Anne Humphrey) is covered here. For other Roberts lines go HERE.

Generation No. 1

1. HUMPHREY JOHN was born in Merioneth, Wales. He married GAINOR.

Notes for HUMPHREY JOHN: Clarence Roberts (1940) got the name from "Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania" by Thomas Allen Glenn vol II, p. 91, 97, 176-7 where a Humphrey John is listed as the father of John and Robert Humphrey of Gwynedd, PA, with the further notation that he was Humphrey John (alias Jones) of the parish of Llangower, co. Merioneth, Wales and was buried 1 February 1678 at Llangower. The name of his wife Gainor is from the same source.

In addition to the 5 brothers and sisters listed it appears that there were probably two others: Gainor and Ellin Humphrey, but data is lacking (Clarence Roberts)

The editor of this web page (JQ) notes that on the 1699 marriage certificate of Anne Humphrey (m. Edward Roberts), a Humphrey Morgan signs just below her name where her father would be expected to sign, so the name of the parent may be Humphrey Morgan instead of Humphrey John. Humphrey Morgan of Merion township was buried at Merion Meeting on 11 mo. [Jan.], 26, 1700/1. He may be the father of the Morris Morgan (or Humphrey) found in the early Pennsylvania records too. A Maurice Humphrey Morgan was among those ordered to be arrested in 1681 for attending Quaker Meetings in Llanfor, Merionethshire (others on the arrest list were Griffith John [later of Merion], Robert John Evan, and Hugh Griffith [later of Gwynedd.]) In the Llanfawr Parish Records (Merionethshire, Wales) is a baptism for a John son of Humphrey Morgan on 15 March 1667. There was also a Catherine daughter of Humphrey Morgan baptised on 9 December 1677 (Elfed Owen).

Children of HUMPHREY JOHN and GAINOR are:

2. i. JOHN HUMPHREY, b. 1668, Wales; d. November 13, 1738, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

3. ii. ANNE HUMPHREY, d. Aft. 1748.

4. iii. ROBERT HUMPHREY, b. Abt. 1675; d. 1736, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., Pennsylvania.

5. iv. ELIZABETH HUMPHREY, d. Bef. October 18, 1736, Merion twp., Philadelphia now Montgomery Co., PA.

v. CATHARINE HUMPHREY, m. ROWLAND HUGH, October 08, 1708, Merion meeting-house, Philadelphia Co., PA; b. Abt. 1689; d. Of Gwynedd, PA.

Notes for ROWLAND HUGH: In the marriage to Catherine Humphrey at Merion MH, John and Robert Humphrey (her brothers) were the second and third witnesses.

This line is continued HERE.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN HUMPHREY (HUMPHREY1 JOHN) was born 1668 in Wales, and died November 13, 1738 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married (2) GAINOR JOHN, widow of John Cadwalader.

Notes for JOHN HUMPHREY:

John was one of the original owners of land in Gwynedd, PA in 1698. His 574 acre tract is in today's Lower Gwynedd township roughly from Sumneytown Pike to the Horsham township line and Brushtown Rd. to a line of extension of the Pennlyn Pike. His home would be located on the west side of Old Bethlehem Pike just north of its former intersection with Sumneytown Pike and just north of the bridge over the creek there. On the 1848-9 map this spot is marked with the name R. Yocum (Bethlehem Pike has since been rerouted to the west, but the old road still exists as a back street).

John Humphrey was a Friend (Quaker) in Wales as related in Historical Collections of Gwynedd by Howard Jenkins and the first meetings in 1699 were in his home and that of John Hugh. After the Meeting House was built, he remained a very active friend and frequently appointed to attend Quarterly Meeting in Philadelphia, served the meeting as an overseer for Gwynedd Prepartive, was a frequent overseer of marriages and was sometimes chosen to handle disputes between members (minutes of Gwynedd Meeting).

His will (dated 7-3-1736, proved 2 Dec 1738) shows him the chief money lender in the surrounding communities (there were no banks). He was one of the original members of the Society of Friends in Gwynedd and was for years an elder and useful member of Gwynedd meeting, but as his wealth increased his ministry decreased. (opinion of some of his fellow Quakers as related by H.M. Jenkins, 1897). The will names one son and three daughters, all of them married, all apparently born in Wales.

Clarence Roberts:  He was twice married, his second wife being Gwen (on marriage certificates she is Gainor not Gwen - JQ), widow of John Cadwalader of Llanfawr, Merionethshire, North Wales. There were at least three children of John and [Gainor] (step-children of John Humphrey). The step-children were Jane Jones (m. 3-29-1707, at Gwynedd Meeting House, to Evan Griffith, 2nd son of Griffith John); Cadwalader Jones (m. 9-12-1719, at Gwynedd MH, Martha Thomas, dau. of David, of Radnor. In the will of John Humphrey, Cadwalader Jones is called "son in law" (step-son). In the record of his own marriage, he is called "Cadwalader Jones, son of John Cadwalader, of the parish of Llandfawr, Merionethshire, North Wales." [Recs. of Gwynedd Mo. Meeting, Montgomery Co., 1714-1870, Marriages, No. 22.]); Elizabeth Jones (m. 8-10-1711, at Gwynedd MH, Thomas David, of Gwynedd. [Recs. of Radnor Mo. Mtg., 1860-1873, p. 27.] In the will of John Roberts, merchant, of Phila. Co., she is called Elizabeth Davis, wife of Thomas Davis, of Gwynedd, Phila. Co., and step-daughter of John Humphreys of Gwynedd." [Phila. Will book E., p. 160.]). On all three of these children's marriages the first woman related to them to sign is called Gainor Humphrey (not Gwen).

Note from JQ, 2007: Elfed Owen, of Wales, in an e-mail correspondence with me suggests that T. A. Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, page 180 of Vol 1) was mistaken in thinking that Gwen wife of John Humphrey was the daughter of John ap Evan, as Gwen John Evan was a widow in 1697. This John ap Evan was the father of Jane John the wife of Robert Cadwalader, the founder of one of the Gwynedd, PA Roberts families. He is correct that Glenn is mistaken, since Cadwalader Jones' marriage certificate names his father as John Cadwalader of Llanfawr. In addition, the name on the marriage certificates where the mother would most likely sign is Gainor, not Gwen. For instance the marriage of daughter Jane Jones: "Whereas Evan Griffith second son of Griffith John of Meirion in the County of Philadelphia and Jane Jones step daughter of John Humphrey of Gwynedd in the aforesaid county having declared their intentions of Marriage" etc. "this 29 day of the 3d mo.: 1707" etc. Witnesses: Men sign below the bride and groom: Griffith John, Jno Humphrey, Wm John, Edd ffoulke, Jno Griffith, Caddr Jones, Hugh Jones, Tho: Jones, Hum: Jones, Tho: Evan, Hugh Griffith and Robt Evan; Women sign in column to left of the men: Gaenor Humphrey, Anne Jones, Eliza: Jones, Ellin ffoulke, Cath: Jones, Grace Griffith, Anne Lewis, Ellin Jones, Eliza: Jones, Anne Pugh, Ellin Parry, Gainor Jones, Anne Evan, Sara Evan, Cath: Pugh, Ellin Griffith, Lowry Evan, Ellin Roberts. (Radnor MM records).

Furthermore, Elfed Owen supplies the following Welsh parish records for the family of John Cadwallader and Gainor John (who marries 2nd John Humphrey of Gwynedd):

1. Baptism at Llanfawr (sometimes spelt as Llanfor or Llanvawr ) Church on 10 July 1683 - Jane daughter of John Cadwalader
2. Baptism at Llanfawr Church on 23 August 1685 - Elizabeth daughter of John Cadwalader of Ciltalgarth (a township in Llanfawr)
3. Baptism at Llanfawr Church on 8 March 1687 - Cadwalader son of John Cadwalader of Ciltalgarth
4. Burial at Llanfawr Church on 1 July 1693 - John Cadwalader of Ciltalgarth
5. Sometime between May 1692 and October 1693 there is a marriage at Llanfawr church between a John Humphrey and ???? John ( the records for this period are very faint and very difficult to read)

Children of JOHN HUMPHREY are:

Note: Other families using the last name JONES at Gwynedd MM are described HERE.

6. i. HUMPHREY JONES, b. Bef. 1698, Wales; d. Pennsylvania.

ii. HUGH JONES.

There are two families at Gwynedd MM that use the name Hugh Jones. This one and the descendants of Hugh Jones of Plymouth. Thus, the following from the Gwynedd MM records could pertain to either Hugh Jones, son of John Humphrey or Hugh Jones, son of Hugh Jones (my suspicion is the 1723 marriage is the latter, and the 1725 marriage is Hugh, son of John Humphrey, but I need to check the records and see who signs the marriage certificates - The Hugh Jones of Plymouth, son of Hugh Jones, left a will in Plymouth, 1739, naming no wife and he apparently had no children). In addition, there appears to be an unknown Hugh Jones on the 1734 tax list for Gwynedd township and left a will in 1748:

Gwynedd MM minutes:

53-1. 1723-1-26. Hugh Jones married contrary to discipline and offered an account [probably a different Hugh Jones].

1725-6-31. Hugh Jones and Cathrine Evans reported married [this one I think].

1745 Hugh Jones appears to have lost a child in 1745 in the epidemic that killed half of Gwynedd's children. Child of Hugh Jones 24th of 6th mo. (last child to die)

46-1. Hugh Jones d. 8-1-1759 (this is Hugh Jones of Hatfield, who we believe is the son of John Humphrey of Gwynedd).

1734 Philadelphia Co. tax list, Gwynedd township:

John Jones, penman
John Jones, Robert's son
John Jones, weaver
Cadwalader Jones [this is Hugh's step brother]
Hugh Jones, tanner
Gaynor Jones
Hugh Jones

presumably brother Humphrey Jones is living on the property of John Humphrey and not listed... There is no Hugh Jones in Plymouth, so the second one could be the son of Hugh Jones, or another, unknown man.

The Hugh Jones who married Catherine Evans (sister of Edward Evans who married Elizabeth Griffith, the daughter of Evan Griffith and Jane Jones) left a will in Hatfield twp.

HUGH JONES. Hatfield, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. April 23, 1758. Proved August 24, 1758. Philadelphia Will book L.145.
Wife: Catharine. Mother: Margaret Griffith.
Children: Amos, Mary, Nathan, Jane and Margaret.
Cousin: Ellis Pugh.
Trustees: Amos Griffith, Joseph Griffith, Rowland Evans.
Exec: Catherine and Amos Jones.
Wit: Nicholas Gelis, Abram Rutt, John Roberts.

Amos Griffith and Joseph Griffith are the sons of Hugh Jones' step-sister Jane Jones who married Evan Griffith. Margaret, the mother of Catherine Evans had three husbands: (1) an Evans, (2) Thomas Owen of Salford twp., who died before 29 August 1733, when his will was proved, and (3) Evan Griffith on November 23, 1736 at Gwynedd MH (Evan Griffith being a widower after the death of Jane Jones).

The following Gwynedd Meeting minutes are likely to pertain to children of Hugh Jones.

page 320-2, 1761-10-6. Amos Jones offered account for marriage out of unity

page 144-3, 1772-11-24. Amos Jones disowned for disunity

page 287-2. 1760-6-24. Nathan Jones disowned for enlisting as a soldier.

Note that Howard Jenkins in Historical Collections of Gwynedd, thought that Hugh Jones, son of John Humphrey died in 1748 unmarried. There was a Hugh Jones who died 1748 in Gwynedd and here is his will abstract.:

HUGH JONES, Gwynedd, County of Philadelphia. Widower.
3 mo. 22, 1748/9. June 22, 1748. G.297.
Brother: Robert.
Nephews and Nieces: Hugh Jones, and Catherine and Susannah Jones.
Exec: Jacob Jones.
Overseers: Thomas Evans Jr. and Isaac Jones.
Wit: Owen Evans, Evan Ellis and John Roberts.

Hugh's brother Humphrey Jones had no children named Hugh or Susannah and they had no brother Robert, so this is not the son of John Humphrey. We can also rule out Hugh Jones Jr. of Plymouth as he left a will in Plymouth in 1739 (F.122). So this is a mystery Hugh Jones as far as his origins go. The names on the will suggest the family of David Jones of Blockley (had children named Jacob and Susannah) or the family of Robert Jones of Merion (who married Ellen, a sister of David Jones of Blockley.)

3. ANNE HUMPHREY (HUMPHREY1 JOHN) died Aft. 1748. She married EDWARD ROBERTS May 22, 1699 in Merion MH, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He was born in Wales, and died Abt. 1749 in Of Gwynedd PA.

Note: The Edward Roberts line (m. Anne Humphrey) is covered here. For other Roberts lines and perhaps some additional documentation for this line go HERE.

Notes for EDWARD ROBERTS:

Edward Roberts was called "Batchelor" of Merion at the time of his marriage. His wife, Anne Humphrey, was called "Spinster" of Merion. He probably removed soon after that to Gwynedd, where he was called "yeoman" at the time of his death.

Clarence Roberts:

In "Merion in the Welsh Tract", p. 250, Glenn says that Anne, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Humphrey, married Edward Roberts, son of Hugh Roberts, 1699, presumably referring to this Anne. This is a double error, inasmuch as Anne, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Humphrey, did not marry until 6-22-1716, when she married, at the age of 50, George Hogg, widower, of New Castle (Recs. of Radnor Mo. Mtg., 1680-1733, p. 322, see also, the will of her sister, Rebecca Rees, which calls her "sister Ann Hogg", of New Castle County Delaware, Phila Will Book E, p. 264) Furthermore Edward Roberts, son of Hugh (presumably the preacher) although three times married did not marry an Anne Humphrey (See "Old Philadelphia Families - Roberts, by Frank Willing Leach)
In "Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania" (vol I., p. 46), Glenn repeats his error by making Anne (the wife of Edward Roberts), a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Humphrey.

Having disposed of these statements we give the facts as far as they are available. The names of the witnesses in the "near relative" column at the marriage of Edward Roberts, of Merion, bachelor, and Ann Humphreys, of the same place, spinster, are in the men's column, Humphrey Morgan, Jon. Humphrey, Abell Thomas, Robert Roberts, Owen Robts., Robt. David, John Caddr., Edward Robt., Richard Tho.; and in the women's column, Margaret Robt., Ellin Humphrey, Elizabeth Thomas, Katherine Humphrey, Gainor Robt., Elizabeth William, Elizabeth Robts., etc., etc. [JQ - these signatures suggest the following relationships: First, the name of the father of Anne (and of John Humphrey) is Humphrey Morgan (who was buried at Merion Meeting, 11 Mo. 26, 1700; Second, the brothers and sisters of Anne are as described here by Clarence Roberts; Third, the persons with the surname Roberts are Robert, Owen, Edward, Margaret, Gainor and Elizabeth. Robert David names a kinswoman, Margaret Robert in his will.]

8-8-1708 - at the marriage of Rowland Hugh of Gwynedd, and Catherine Humphrey, of Merion, the witnesses are Margret Robt., John Humphrey, Robt. Humphrey, Ellin Hugh, Anne Robert, Eliza. Thomas, Jane Hugh, Gainor Humphrey, Abel Thomas etc.

2-23-1719 - At the marriage of Humphrey Jones (son of John Humphrey), and Catherine Jones, the witnesses are: J. Humphrey, Jane Jones, John Jones, David Lewden, Robert Humphrey, Robert David, Edward Robert, etc. showing that Edward and Anne Robert are nearly related to the Humphrey family at Gwynedd.

Of particular interest is the marriage of Hugh Evan (son of Evan Pugh and Grace) to Mary Robert as this suggests a family for the Edward Roberts who marries Ann Humphrey. This Mary Robert is the daughter of Robert John who lived and died in Merioneth, Wales and Mary Jones who signs her wedding certificate first among the female relatives. An Edward Roberts signs with a John and a William as her brother. Also signing are two Jane Roberts and two Ann Roberts, one likely the wife of Edward:

Hugh Evan, eldest son of Evan Pugh, of Gwynedd m. Mary Robert d/o Robert John who lived and died in Merioneth, Wales, at a public meeting in Gwynedd, 3rd mo 25, 1716. Wit: Col 1 under bride and groom: Evan Pugh, Cadw. Evan, William Robert, Edward Robert, Jno Robert, Rbt Pugh, Edwd Foulke, Hugh Jones, Jos Jones, Evan Robert, Edwd Robert, Thos Foulke, Edwd Rees, Ellis Pugh, Abell Thomas, Robt William, Edwd William, John Humphrey, John Hugh, Rowland Richard, Hugh Griffith, Theo Williams, Ellis Hugh, John Griffith, Rowland Evans; Middle Column: George Lewis, Wm Robert, Hugh Foulke, Hum Jones, Wm Williams, Ellis Robert, Jno RObert, Robt Humphreys, Hugh Robert. Women in right column: Mary Jones, Grace Pugh, Jane Robert, Jane Robert, Gainor Jones, Margaret Williams, Johan? Hugh, Margt Hugh, Sarah Pugh, Anne Robert, Catherine Evan, Ellin Pugh, Margt Pugh, Ann Robert, Gainor Musgrave, Martha Thomas, Gainor Humphrey, Margt Roberts, Ellin Robert, Cath William, Ann Foulke, Eliz Roberts, Ellin Hughs.

A strong possibility for the William Roberts on the Hugh Evans marriage certificate would be the one who removes from Goshen to Abington to Whitpain township and is married to a Jane and names a brother Edward in his will. William and Jane Roberts sign the marriage certificate of Edward's daughter Margaret as near relatives. I am less certain about the other brother (John) on Mary Robert's marriage certificate - perhaps this is John Roberts of Abington who married Jane (Jane another name on Mary's wedding certificate) but if this is so (John a brother) it is odd that he does not sign at the wedding of Edward's daughter Margaret (to Hugh Evans) or Edward at the marriage of John's son John (to Mary Dawes.)

Children of ANNE HUMPHREY and EDWARD ROBERTS are:

7. i. MARGARET ROBERTS, b. July 01, 1699, Probably Merion twp., Philadelphia Co., PA.

10. iv. GAINOR ROBERTS, b. September 23, 1709, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., Pennsylvania; d. September 14, 1741.

4. ROBERT HUMPHREY (HUMPHREY JOHN) was born Abt. 1675, and died 1736 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., Pennsylvania. He married MARGARET EVANS, daughter of DAVID EVANS and probably GAINOR. She was born Abt. 1688 in Merionethshire, Wales.

Notes for ROBERT HUMPHREY: Robert Humphrey was an important part of Gwynedd Meeting as was his wife. He was chosen as an overseer of Gwynedd Preparative and Margaret frequently was chosen to attend Quarterly Meeting in Philadelphia and was also chosen to visit and minister to Friends' families.

Will of Robert Humphrey, of Gwynedd, Philadelphia Co., PA, June 24, 1736. Proved September 11, 1736. Will Book F.8.

About Margaret Evans:

As with John Humphrey's wife Gainor (who has been mistaken as the wife of Robert Humphrey), there is a related confusion about the identity of Margaret Evans' mother. In some genealogies she is identified as Margaret John the daughter of John ap Evan (the same as has been proposed as the father of John Humphrey's wife and the wife of Robert Cadwalder). However, the following certificate of removal from Wales leads one to think her name was likely Gainor (assuming Gainor is not a second wife):

Certificate of Removal of Evan ap William Powell (alias Howell), 1683: "To all People whom these may concern, Whereas Evan ap William Powell late inhabitant in the Parish of Llanvachrreth in the County of Merioneth in North Wales, together with his wife Gwen, his two Sons David & Philip also his daughter in law Gainor with her two small children are all upon their removal (the Lord makeing their way thereunto) from their native Country in North Wales aforsd unto the Province of Pennsylvania in America; and Whereas Likewise many leave been Known to transport themselves upon the acct. of their Evill doeings, as theft murther, Debts or running away in passionate discontentedness with parents, wives or the like; Therefore we thought it, our duty to Certify of this family as follows:

As in our relation to ye sd, Evan ap William,, Yt is Known & reputed among all sorts of people of his acquaintance to be an honest plain man, fearing God & Zealous of Good Works, not Given to Covetiousness, inclinable to deeds of Charity upon all just occasion, upon wch. Acct. Otherwise minded people took occasion to Call him a , Quaker for above 30 years past; And his conversation since hath been onest & Savory in soo much yt his wife, Gwen came to be like minded, and of a good example to her children and others, by wch means alsoo their children came to be affected with truth inocency & an inocent Conversation to this day.

And Whereas Alsoe David Evans is now married we doe certify yt he was careful in his choice of an honest woman yt feared God & walked blamelessly & lived in love &,unity with those yt are honest, as Also with one another; And of Philip we doe certify yt he doth hath carried himself amongst us as became ye Gospell of peace & Salvation. And yt his departure from us Is both in unity & amnity, & a clean Single man from being intangled either by word Covenant or any other obligation with any woman kind, as in relation to marriage, or from being spotted with any defamation, otherwise for all yt we Know or heard of: this we thoughit fitt to recommend unto ye testimony of your truly loving Friends:

(signed) Owen Humphrey, Lewis Owen, of Tyddyn y Garreg Meeting

I would add that Margaret Evans' sister Gwen married Thomas Foulke, son of Edward and Eleanor.

Apparently a deadly illness hit this family in 6 mo. (August) 1736 as first daughter Anne dies, followed by the parents Robert and Margaret and daughter Elizabeth.

In "Merion in the Welsh Tract" p. 250 Glenn gives Samuel and Elizabeth Humphrey (the Haverford Humphreys family) a daughter Elizabeth, who marries Thomas Abel. Presumably this is intended for the above Elizabeth. As a matter of fact, there is no proof that Samuel and Elizabeth Humphrey ever had a daughter named Elizabeth. (See "A true account of the births of the children of Samuel Humphrey," Hist. Collections of Gwynedd 2nd ed., p. 447, where no daughter Elizabeth is mentioned). Note that John Humphrey mentions a sister Elizabeth Thomas and that Abel and Elizabeth Thomas sign among the near relatives at marriages of the Humphrey family in Gwynedd. (Clarence Roberts) JQ: A further complication to this story is that Cadwalader Morgan, the Quaker minister of Merion, identifies Abel Thomas as a son in law as well in his will. More can be by persuing The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA) Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, part 1 and part 4.

Children of ELIZABETH HUMPHREY and ABEL THOMAS are:

Generation No. 3

6. HUMPHREY JONES (JOHN2 HUMPHREY, HUMPHREY1 JOHN) was born Bef. 1698 in Wales, and died in Pennsylvania. He married CATHERINE JONES April 03, 1719 in Gwynedd MM, PA, daughter of WILLIAM JOHN and JANE HUGH. She died Abt. 1740 in Pennsylvania.

Notes for HUMPHREY JONES: Chuck Lentz: He inherited his father's estate and perhaps some more through his wife, but was left penniless towards the end of his life.

Gwynedd MM Records:

There is a different Humphrey Jones in later minutes, very likely his son (see will of Cathrine Jones of Gwynedd, below):

There is the possibility that these records are for his son Humphrey Jones instead of him, but we suspect that the Humphrey Jones disowned in 1757 is the son.

ii JOHN JONES

There are three John Jones in the Gwynedd township tax list of 1734. We know from his mother's will that John, son of Humphrey Jones is alive in 1750, so did not die young and is likely alive in Gwynedd in 1734. It is implied, but not proved, that this is the John Jones called a weaver, since we know who the other two John Jones in Gwynedd township are. The other possible parents of John Jones, weaver, are Cadwalader Jones (step brother of Humphrey Jones) and his wife Martha Thomas who also named a son John in his 1762 will that is not accounted for.

Gwynedd MM records make it likely that John Jones was over time disowned by the meeting in 1739/40...

5th month, 1739, John Jones, weaver spoken with

6th month, 1739, William Williams and Hugh Griffith are appointed to enquire how John Jones, weaver has behaved since last meeting

8th month, 1739, John Jones, weaver, appeared to the dissatisfaction of Frds, "Little or no hope remaining of his Amendment." John Jones and Owen Evans appointed to write up a report about it.

11th month, 1739/40. The paper concerning John Jones, weaver was to be read after a 1st day meeting

1 month, 1740. Paper against John Jones, weaver was read

There was a John Jones, weaver, in Montgomery township, 1776 with 100 acres, 2 horses, 4 cattle

iii. CATHERINE JONES

iv.JANE JONES married DAVID LAWRENCE. David was born September 4, 1712 in Haverford twp., Chester (now Delaware) Co., PA, the son of Thomas Lawrence and Sarah Williams. He died 1757.

Gwynedd MM records:  1740-9 (Nov)-25. Jane Jones and David Lawrence reported married.

Will abstract:  DAVID LAWRENCE, Co. of Chester, Pa. Weaver. 5 mo. 18, 1757. August 1, 1757. K.554.
Brother: William.
Uncle: Henry Lawrence.
children: Thomas, Ezekiel, Joseph, William and Tace (and unknown <--?-->).
Beneficiary: Society of Quakers in Haverford Township, Chester Co., Pa.
Exec: Wife Jane and cousin Daniel Williams (baker).
Guardian: Daniel Williams.
Witnesses: Samuel Humphreys, Lewis Davis, Abraham Musgrove.

David's brother William and sister Tacy Lawrence also leave items in their wills to David's children.

v. GAINOR JONES

She possibly [and we are not confident yet] married John Bartholomew (not a Friend) in 1747. "Elizabeth Morgan and Ellin Evans are appointed [to visit] Gainor Bartholomew respecting her going out in marriage..."; 5 mo., 1747 - "the friends appointed to speak with Gainor Bartholomew have done accordingly and report they found her in a tender frame of mind desireing frds would wait a longer time and not immediately proceed to ...[page torn]"

vi. HUMPHREY JONES

born about 1722, he married Mary Humphreys at Swede's Church, Philadelphia on 27 July, 1756, and in 1757 he apologized to Gwynedd MM for this marriage contrary to discipline. He was later disowned in 1759 anyway. Humphrey Jones is mentioned in his mother's will in 1750 and is on the 1769 Gwynedd township tax list with 190 acres, 3 horses, 4 cows, no servants and a tax assessment of 27 pounds, 18 shillings, and a few pence. In 1776 this is reported as 180 acres with 3 horses and 5 cows. He is mentioned in some wills: Evan Ellis (see below), Jane Williams of Montgomery twp. (1769, Philadelphia County O.365, "brother in law", Jane Williams also mentions brother Humphrey Humphreys), Evan David of Towamencin (1770, witness),  Edward Johnson of Gwynedd twp. (1772, Philadelphia County P.301, executor).

Gwynedd MM, page 182-2. 1757-3-29. Humphrey Jones and wife Mary married contrary to discipline and offered an account.

Gwynedd MM, page 266-2. 1759-10-30. Humphrey Jones disowned.

Mary Humphreys was the daughter of John Humphrey of Horsham twp. (an apparently unrelated line, likely not Quaker and born in Wales) and he left a will:

JOHN HUMPHREY, Horsham, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. January 11, 1732/3. April 7, 1733. E.228.
Wife: Mary.
Children: Margarett, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, Humphrey.
Trustees and Guardians: Thomas Foulke, Joseph Bak, Humphrey Jones, Evan Foulke.
Exec: Mary Humphrey.
Wit: Evan Ellis, James Nash, Evan Jones.

Somehow this next will abstract also ties into the Humphreys of Horsham and Humphrey Jones. It implies that John Humphrey of Horsham's wife was Mary Ellis, sister of Evan Ellis:

EVAN ELLIS, Gwynedd, Co. of Philadelphia. August 24, 1761. September 24, 1761. M.190.
Sisters: Margaret, Jane, Elinor [Jones] and Douce [Williams].
Nephews: Evan Jones and Evan Williams [of Wales], Humphrey Jones.
Nieces: Jane [daughter of John Humphry of Wales] and Margaret [daughter of sister Jane, surname not given].
Overseers: Amos Griffith, Robert Ellis, David Pugh.
Exec: Humphrey Jones.
Wit: Rowland Edwards, John Davis, Evan Jones.

Mary Jones, wife of Humphrey Jones appears to have been a Quaker and not disowned for her marriage to Humphrey Jones at Swede's Church as she is not disowned until 1779:

Gwynedd MM, Page 297-3. 1779-4-27. Mary Jones was reproached for leaving her husband Humphrey Jones and going to Philadelphia "which gave rise to a report prejudicial to her character". She was unrepentent and was disowned.

Humphrey and Mary Jones likely had children. I suspect one of them was Elizabeth Jones who married James White, August 17, 1790, but have only rumors of this presently. They named a child Humphrey Jones White (whose wife Susanna is buried at Gwynedd Meeting). There are many of the James White line in the Gwynedd Meeting burial ground (including James, d. June 29, 1859, aged 104 and Elizabeth, d. May 23, 1830, aged 64). White's Road, on the border between Lansdale and Upper Gwynedd, is named after this family. Thomas White, a son born about 1800 kept an inn on Valley Forge Road between White's Road and Allentown Road. Isaac White on the 1850 Montgomery twp. census is likely another son and his wife Elizabeth is also buried at Gwynedd. If someone can definitely establish the connection of the White family to the Humphrey Jones line please e-mail the author of this web page.

7. MARGARET ROBERTS (ANNE2 HUMPHREY, HUMPHREY1 JOHN) was born July 01, 1699 in Probably Merion twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. She married (1) HUGH EVANS October 23, 1719 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia Co., PA, son of ROBERT EVANS and ELLEN. He was born Abt. 1685 in Wales, and died 1734. She married (2) ROBERT JONES January 05, 1746/47 in Radnor MH, Chester Co., PA, son of ROBERT JONES and ELLEN JONES. He was born 1709 in Of Lower Merion, and died 1770.

Howard Jenkins: Hugh Evans, of Gwynedd, son of Robert, d. 1734, m. 8th mo. 23, 1719, Margaret Roberts, dau. of Edward. He received, in 1719, from his father, a deed for 275 acres of land, in the north-eastern part of Robert's original tract - the part next to the meeting house. He lived probably at his father's house (belonging in 1884 to Silas White) and in his will (dated 2 May, 1734, probabed Oct. 1, same year) makes provisionfor his parents living there. He leaves to his son Robert, the west side of his farm, "with the buildings and improvements; extending eastward to a fence about 20 perches westward of the Great Road," and to his son Jesse the remainder of the farm, eastward of this fence. He names his sons Hugh, jr., and Edward and daughters Anne, Sarah and Mary. He appoints his wife executrix, and names as trustees for his minor children, his brother-in-law, Robert Roberts, his cousins, Evan Evans, Owen Evans, John Evans, and Thomas Evans; and John Jones. Margaret, his widow, m. 1747, Robert Jones of Merion.

iv. JESSE EVANS, m. CATHARINE JONES, June 19, 1750; b. Of Horsham twp., Montgomery Co., PA.

Notes for JESSE EVANS: Howard Jenkins (1897) As has been already stated, the central part of the present store-building and residence of Walter H. Jenkins was a hotel during the Revolution. Jesse Evans, the tailor, when he sold most of his property to George Maris, in 1755, retained this, (now W.H.J.'s), but as he became insolvent, the sheriff sold it for him, in November, 1764, to Jacob Wentz, of Worcester.

Jesse Evans, of Gwynedd, son of Hugh, m. 4th mo. 19, 1750, Catherine Jones, dau. of John, of Horsham. The Family Record (1797) refers to him as having "formerly lived where George Maris lives." He was a tailor by trade as well as a farmer, and, in 1755, sold the 55 1/2 acres left him by his father (which included the present dwelling of Dr. M. R. Knapp, the dwelling and store of Wm. H. Jenkins, and the Acuff hotel property), to George Maris, for 270 pounds. He then bought of Hugh Evans, of Merion, Thomas's son, the property now owned [1884] by Jacob B. Bowman. Of his children no list has been obtained.

Howard Jenkins:

John Evans, of Gwynedd, son of John and Eleanor, b. 12th mo. (Feb), 1730, d. 9th mo. (Sep) 1807, m. Nov. 19, 1734, Margaret Foulke, dau. of Evan and Ellen of Gwynedd. (Margaret, b. 4th mo. 19, 1726, d. 3d mo. 6, 1798). It was this John who furnished Cadwallader, his nephew (son of Rowland), with the family data which form the basis of the Family Record of 1797 and later. He was known in Gwynedd as "John Evans, the elder" (though his own father's name was John), in order to distinguish him from his son John. He was a prominent and active member of Gwynedd meeting. Joseph Foulke gives some interesting reminiscences of him. He lived all his life at the old home of his father and grandfather, in Gwynedd now (1896) the Hollingsworth estate place). "From letters in my possession, written to his son," says Rowland Evans, Esq., "he seems to have been an earnestly religious man." His will, which presents him as quite a rich man, was probated November 6, 1807. He gives his son John the "plantation, consisting of three tracts, where he now dwells," in Gwynedd, about 192 acres; directs his son Cadwallader to release any supposed claim he may have on the fee or title, in consideration of bequests now made him; leaves two tracts (homestead) to his son Cadwalader, on 245 acres, the other 36, he to pay 500 pounds to his [the testator's] grandsons John and Robert; bequeaths to his friends Levi Foulke, Jesse Foulke, and John Jones jr., son of Evan, or their survivors, 20 pounds in trust to keep up the burial ground enclosure at Gwynedd meeting, the fund to be used in the discretion of Gwynedd preparative meeting; gives his son Cadwalader two undivided thirds in 50 acres of land adjoining the homestead, "late estate of brother Cadwalader," gives son Cadwalader the half residue of estate, the other half to grandson Robert; gives 200 pounds to son John; gives 200 pounds to grandsons Rowland and Evan in equal shares; appoints son Cadwalader and grandson Robert executors.

The second John Evans, of Gwynedd, called John "the elder," is thus described by the late Joseph Foulke: "Among the remarkable persons that I recollect in those early days [about 1800] was John Evans, the elder. He was a tall, spare person, with a long visage, and very wrinkled face. He carried a smooth cane, with a carved head and natural curve. He wore loops in his hat, with the rim slightly turned up behind and at the two sides. He and two or three others of Gwynedd were among the first who took a firm stand against the use of ardent spirits. They banished it from their houses and harvest fields, though in the face of great difficulties. One of the last meetings that John Evans attended, he spoke on this subject, saying that 'where he had endeavored most he had effected least,' but urging his hearers to persevere."

His estate was settled by Roberts Vaux, Esq. of Philadelphia, adminstrator. An obituary article in MS., among the Cadw. Foulke papers (taken apparently from a Philadelphia newspaper) says he was brought up by his grandfather (John Evans who left him valuable bequests), and lived with him till 1805, when he engaged as an apprentice to a mercantile house in Philadelphia. The article describes him in terms of warm praise as a very exemplary and much beloved man, devoted in his leisure to literature and scientific studies, and with "talents and acquirements remarkably devoted to the good of his fellow creatures." Notes for CADWALADER EVANS:

Howard Jenkins:

Cadwalader Evans, jr., was the son of John and Margaret. He was born at Gwynedd, December 25, 1762, resided there until 1812, when he removed to Philadelphia, and died in that city in 1841. He received a good education, and with unusual energy and mental vigor, made his mark early. He was trained as a surveyor, and for many years, in his own neighborhood and elsewhere, followed his profession with success. In the mature and later years of his life he performed important work in surveying in distant parts of the State, especially the western counties. In 1790 he was first elected to the State Legislature, and he then entered upon a lengthened career as a member of the House. He was chosen continuously from Montgomery county for nine years, -1790 to 1798 inclusive, -his colleagues including James Vaux, Jonathan Roberts, Nathaniel B. Boileau, Frederick Conrad, and other prominent and able men. Among these, though he was under thirty when first elected, he at once took a prominent part, being placed on important committees in his first year; his name appears in many places in the House journal coupled with that of Albert Gallatin, and others of the most distinguished members in that period. In 1798, the last year the Legislature met in Philadelphia, he was unanimously chosen Speaker of the House. Again in 1802, and in 1805, he was elected from Montgomery county, and in 1814, after his removal to Philadelphia, he was elected one of the city members.

In 1816 he sold the old family homestead in Gwynedd to Charles Willing Hare, Esq., of Philadelphia. He was one of the local directors of the Bank of the United States, after its recharter in 1816. In 1813 he had been among the first to actively urge the construction of a canal along the Schuylkill, from Philadelphia to the coal regions, and he was elected the first president of the Schuylkill Navigation Company, and served in that capacity for many years. In 1830, when, on account of advancing age, he resigned the presidency, the stockholders, at their annual meeting, voted that he should be presented a silver vase as a testimonial of their high appreciation of his services. Joseph Foulke, in his manuscript Reminiscences, furnished the author, says of C.E.:

"He began his distingushed career about the 18th or 19th year of his age. One of his first engagements was surveying for the road jury, and laying out what is now called the "Lower State road", at least the western section of it terminating in what is now the Bethlehem turnpike. This was in 1786. He was a man of quick and clear perception, of ready utterance, and a powerful disputant; he was eminently gifted in conveyancing, and in drawing instruments of writing....The last office he filled, I think, was one of the electors that made Gen. Harrison President, in 1840. As a surveyor in old time, though a young man, he stood high, and great confidence was reposed in him. He, Robert Loller, and Archibald McClean did most of the surveying in our parts until about 1807, when Cadwalader Foulke came to Gwynedd and took a large portion of the business."

Edith was one of the few first class passengers on the Titanic not to survive. A resident of New York City, Evans, 36, boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. In the early hours of April 15th, after all of the main lifeboats had got away, Col. Archibald Gracie rushed up to where Second Officer Charles Lightoller was placing women and children into collapsible life boat D. Gracie guided Mrs. John Murray Brown and Edith Evans as far as he could before being stopped by the cordon Lightoller had set up to prevent a rush on the boat. Evans turned to Brown and said, "You go first, you have children waiting at home." Brown stepped into the boat, but Evans did not, and the boat left without her.
