3. Children of Robert (last name unknown) of Penllyn, Wales (namely William, Ellis, John, Lowry, Jane and Evan)

William, Ellis, John, and Evan Robert always sign next to each other on Quaker marriage certificates and sign the certificates of Lowry and Jane as the nearest relatives (brothers), clearly showing this to be a family group. Another relationship gleaned from the records is that these six siblings are related to the children of Robert Cadwalader as they sign the marriage certificates of his children as a group and Robert Cadwalader's children also signed the marriage certificates of these six. Presumably the relationship is first cousin, though nephews and nieces can't be ruled out. In any case this relationship gives a high probability to a Penllyn, Merionethshire, Wales origin for this family. The mother or father of these six siblings is the sister or brother of Robert Cadwallader or his wife, perhaps named Jane.

3a. William Roberts m. (1) Anne Jones and (2) Mary Evans

His brothers Ellis Roberts that married Elizabeth Thomas, John Roberts who married Eleanor Lewis and Evan Roberts who married Jane Evan, and they are covered separately below (3b, 3c and 3f). We do not know who their parents are.

Descendants of William Roberts and Ann Jones

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM ROBERTS was born Abt. 1690, and died Bef. 1748 in Of Worcester twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. He married (1) ANNE JONES February 04, 1707/08 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia Co., PA. He married (2) MARY EVANS November 16, 1736 in Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, daughter of OWEN EVANS and ELIZABETH. She was born 1692 in of Dolgelly, Merioneth, Wales, and died 1748 in Frederick Co., VA (will Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA).

Notes for MARY EVANS: She survived her second husband and her will was made 3rd mo (May) 1748 and proved in August. She mentions her grandsons Ellis and Elijah Pugh, her granddaughter Mary Pugh, her "only daughter" Sina Walker (Abel Walker of Tredyffrin, m. Sina Pugh, of Gwynedd, 4th mo 13 1727); her grandson Isaac Walker, the daughters of her son, Ellis Roberts, her brothers John, Cadwallader and Thomas. (Howard Jenkins)

Grandchildren: Ellis, Elijah and Mary Pugh, and Isaac Walker. Exec: John Evans. Wit: John Evans and Rowland Evans.

Mary was buried in Frederick Co., VA per Gwynedd MM records

Although I have not identified Ann Jones' parents there are some other members of her family in Gwynedd. Her sister Jane married George Lewis and her brother David Jones seems to have married William Roberts' sister Lowry (see 3d below).

Children of WILLIAM ROBERTS and ANNE JONES are:

i. CATHERINE ROBERTS, b. January 02, 1708/09, per Gwynedd MM Birth Records, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. She married Edward HUGHES, son of Morgan Hughes of Towamencin, and her line is continued on the Griffith/Hugh/Pugh/Morris web page.

ii. OWEN ROBERTS, b. September 28, 1711, per Gwynedd MM Birth Records, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

Gwynedd MM Records (per Records at the Friends Historical Center, Swarthmore College):

John son of Owen and Jane Roberts was buried the 26th day of 5 mo.[July] 1745. [Victim of the epidemic]

Philadelphia MM Records (per William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 2)

1747, 9, 27. Owen & wife Jane, received on certificate from Gwynedd MM

1751, 6, 27. Owen and wife Jane got a certificate to Gwynedd MM

1754, 11, 29. Owen and wife Jane, received on certificate from Buckingham MM

1755, 12, 26. Jane got certificate to Gwynedd MM.

1755, 12, 26. Owen disowned.

Gwynedd MM records: At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 25th of the 8th mo 1752

5th Owen Roberts being present in this Meeting confesses his being sorry for his giving Friends any trouble in that Rum was used at his Vendue, and this Meeting accepts of it, and on application for a certificate for said Owen and his wife to Buckingham Monthly Meeting, Rees Harry and Amos Griffith are desired to make the necessary inquiry and draw one accordingly.

By 1760 Owen and Jane and family have removed to Loudoun Co., Virginia (documentation provided by Lois Murphy) where their daughter Ann marries:

"Benjamin Burson, son of Joseph Burson married Ann Roberts, 23rd day of 10th mo 1760. Witnesses: Joseph Burson, Owen Robert, Jane Robert, Catherine Robert, William Robert, Owen Williams, William Williams, Margrett Williams, Feby? West, Elizabeth Potts, Prisylla Williams, Elizabeth Hough, Samuel Potts, Jonas Potts, Mary Kirk, Margret Norton, Elener Poultney, Alice Yates, Elizabeth Norton, Jane Cunard, James Burson, Mary Burson, James Potts (smith), David Potts, Elizabeth Potts, Mary Potts, Martha Hatfield, Sarah Potts, Jos. Burson (mason), James Cunard, Shadrick Lewelin, Levy Wells, John Hough, Francis Hague, Wm. Grant, James Carter, Edward Norton, Jos. Yates, Thos Lewillin, Isaac Williams, Mercer Brown, Robert Yates, Andrew Adam, Ann Carr."

From the Williams names on this document and a later first cousin disownment, it appears that Jane, the wife of Owen is likely the sister of the William Williams who married Margaret McGrew. Thus she would be the daughter of Richard Williams of Gwynedd who married Margaret Eaton, widow.

After Benjamin Burson dies (1769), Ann married second Isaac Griffith, son of Abraham Griffith of Richland, Bucks Co., PA which was considered inappropriate. In the "Friends' Intelligencer" of 12 mo. 15, 1823, the following extract from Gunpowder Monthly Meeting records is given: "Twenty-second of Ninth month, 1781, ISAAC GRIFFITH's paper condemning his misconduct in marrying his former wife's brother's widow was read and was satisfactory. The case was on hand for two years." [Source: Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Clarence Roberts, page 214, 215]

In 1761 daughter Catherine marries Robert Popkins and was disowned by the Friends.

Then in 1770, 7th mo 1770 "Ellen (Eleanor) Roberts, formerly Williams, has gone out in marriage with William Roberts, her first cousin, they also had carnal knowledge of each other before marriage." This is presumably son William.

From "Abstracts of Wills, Inventories, and Administration Accounts of Loudoun County, Virginia, 1757-1800", Owen Roberts' will:

11 Jan 1776. "Legatees: wife Jean Roberts; son William Roberts, all land; son William to pay daughter Catherine Popkin 40 shilling yearly for ten years; grandson Joseph Banon or Burow [I believe it should be Burson]. Exr: wife Jean Roberts.

iii. JOHN ROBERTS, b. September 09, 1716, Worcester twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; m. ANNE HUGHES, May 20, 1742, Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

Gwynedd MM minutes 243-1, 1742-3 [May]-20 Ann Hughs daughter of Rowland of Philadelphia Co., PA married John Roberts at Gwynedd Meeting House

2. iv. EVAN ROBERTS, b. 1717; d. Abt. 1761, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

v. WILLIAM ROBERTS, b. 1722. He died in Uwchlan twp., Chester Co., PA in 1780, with no children, and named the children of sister Catherine his heirs.

3. vi. ANN ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1724; d. Of Worcester twp., Philadelphia Co., PA.

vii. HUGH ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1725.

viii. JANE ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1725.

ix. MARY ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1725.

Generation No. 2

2. EVAN ROBERTS (WILLIAM) was born 1717, in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

There are records in the Gwynedd MM minutes and other records that could be him, but I am not sure yet which records go with which Evan...

page 354-1, 1746-6-26 Evan disowned

page 82-2, 1752-7-28 Evan married contrary to discipline and disowned

page 283-2, 1760-4-29 Evan and 2 sons got certificate to Abington MM

page 157-5, 1792-4-24 Evan received on certificate from Richland MM dated 8-18-1792

page 237-5, 1795-4-28 Evan got certificate to Richland MM

page 70-6, 1829-10-29 Evan disowned by the small Orthodox meeting for joining the Hicksites (the larger Gwynedd Meeting)

The other Evan Roberts to whom the earlier of these records could belong at Gwynedd are Evan, the brother of Ellis who married Elizabeth Pugh (see 5b below), Evan son of John and Jane of Abington who witnesses a will in Montgomery township in 1757, and probably has removed there and Evan b. 1734 the son of John Roberts and Mary Dawes, also of the John and Jane Roberts of Abington line. The later records probably belong to Evan, the son of David and Phebe Roberts of Richland.

Children of EVAN ROBERTS are:

Not sure...

3. ANN ROBERTS (WILLIAM) was born Abt. 1724, and died in Of Worcester twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. She married WILLIAM ROBERTS June 17, 1746 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia Co., PA, son of WILLIAM ROBERTS and ANN EVANS. He was born Abt. 1721 in Of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia now Montgomery Co., PA.

Notes for WILLIAM ROBERTS: William Robert, s/o William of Gwynedd m. Ann Roberts d/o William of Worcester at Gwynedd mh 4th mo 17, 1746. Not in mother's 1761 will.

Children of ANN ROBERTS and WILLIAM ROBERTS are:

i. TACY ROBERTS.

ii. PHEBE ROBERTS.

3b. Ellis Roberts m. Elizabeth Thomas, brother of William Roberts above.

Descendants of Ellis Roberts and Elizabeth Thomas

Generation No. 1

1. ELLIS ROBERTS was born Abt. 1689, Merionethshire, Wales, and died 1726 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married ELIZABETH THOMAS March 30, 1715 at Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia (now Montgomery Co.) Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of David Thomas of Radnor twp., Chester (now Delaware) Co., PA

Howard Jenkins mentions this Ellis on p. 424, saying little about him except that he has the 2 brothers John and William. In Chapter 12, the marriage is listed: Ellis Roberts, Gwynedd, tailor, m. Eliza Thomas, d/o David of Radnor, at Radnor mh, 1st mo.(March) 30, 1715

will abstract- ELLIS ROBERTS, Gwynedd, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. April 19, 1726/7. October 1, 1726. E.3. Wife: Elisabeth. Children: Aubry, Ann, Robert, John. Exec: Elisabeth Roberts. Trustees: John Jones, John Humphrey, Cadwallader Jones, Cadwallader Robert. Wit: Robt. Jones, John Roberts, John Jones.

At first I thought the distinctive name of their son Aubrey likely indicated a relationship to the Bevan family of Merion twp. who are descended from John Bevan and Barbara Aubrey (she is b. 1637 in Wales). The Owen Roberts m. Ann Bevan line also uses the name Aubrey Roberts, but the dates do not work to make Ellis, John, William and Lowry children of Owen Roberts, nor are they named in Ann Bevan Robert's will of 1739. The Richardson line of Providence (a prepatory meeting under Gwynedd MM) also is descended from this Bevan/Aubrey line. It appears likely that the name Aubrey comes from the Elizabeth Thomas side. She is likely somehow a descendant [daughter?, niece?] of the Rees Thomas (born about 1665). This Rees Thomas married Martha Aubrey in Wales. According to an undocumented line on the internet Martha Aubrey's brother William is said to have married Letitia Penn, the girl who visited Gwynedd in 1701 with her father, William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania. This undocumented Worldconnect databases also give Rees Thomas a son Aubrey and marries him to the granddaughter of Penn, Gulielma, the daughter of William Penn son of the founder. (Work of William Lees in numerous Worldconnect databases)

There is a good candidate to be the father of Elizabeth other than Rees Thomas and that is David Thomas of Gwynedd who left a will: THOMAS, DAVID. Gwynead, Philadelphia County. Yeoman. April 29, 1732. June 11, 1737. F.38. Wife: Name not given. Children: Elizabeth Roberts, Martha Jones (who had married Cadwalader Jones in 1719 at Gwynedd MH), Rachel Davis and David. Exec: His son David Thomas. Trustees: Thomas Thomas, Rees Thomas and William Thomas. Wit: Rees Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas and Samuel Harry.

David Thomas is likely the brother of Rees Thomas (who is made a trustee) which would make Elizabeth the niece of Rees Thomas.

Note: Somehow Thomas Allen Glenn in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, confuses Ellis with Owen Roberts the father of Lydia Roberts Mendenhall, below.

Note: There is an Ellis Roberts who marries Elizabeth Pugh in this same time frame who can be confused with him.

Children of ELLIS ROBERTS and ELIZABETH THOMAS are:

2. i. AUBREY ROBERTS, b. 3 mo. (May) 24 1716; d. Bet. 1750 - 1751, Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co,. PA.

ii. ANN ROBERTS, b. 1 mo. (March) 20, 1717.

iii. ROBERT ROBERTS, b. 7 mo. (Sept.) 04, 1718, Gwynedd MM Birth Records, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; m. RACHEL HUGH, 1747, Pennsylvania.

iv. JOHN ROBERTS, b. 5 mo. (July) 06, 1723.

Generation No. 2

2. AUBREY ROBERTS (ELLIS) was born March 24, 1715/16, and died Bet. 1750 - 1751 in Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co,. PA. He married ELLIN JONES, daughter of David Jones and Katherine James.

will abtract: AWBREY ROBERTS, Gwynedd, Co. of Philadelphia. August 20, 1750. March 18, 1750/1. J.373. Wife: Ellin. Children: Jacob, Elizabeth, Hannah and Cathrine. Brother-in-Law: Isaac Jones. Exec: Ellin Roberts, Isaac Jones. Trustees: George Lewis, Edward Hughes, John Jones, Jacob Jones. Wit: George Boland (his mark), Rowd. Evans.

Aubrey Roberts and Ellen lost a son on the 22nd of July 1745 in the epidemic that killed about half the children belonging to Gwynedd Prepatory Meeting.

Children of AUBREY ROBERTS and ELLIN are:

i. JACOB ROBERTS.

ii. ELIZABETH ROBERTS.

iii. HANNAH ROBERTS.

iv. CATHRINE ROBERTS.

Aubrey names his wife's brother Isaac Jones (of Montgomery twp) in his will. His wife (Ellin) is named in her father's will:

DAVID JONES, Blockley, Philadelphia County. Yeoman. May 16, 1725. September 22, 1725. D. 430.
Children: James, John, Lewis, Isaac, Jacob, David, Susannah and Ellen. Executors: Wife Katherine and son Lewis.
Witnesses: John Coffock, George Plim, Edward Williams and Robert Jones.

After Aubrey Roberts' death his wife Ellin remarried Rees Harry of Gwynedd township in 1753 as reported in the Gwynedd MM minutes.

Note: There is another Aubrey (Awbrey) Roberts in this same time frame, of Goshen MM, the son of Owen Roberts and Ann Bevan, who could be confused with this man.

3c. William and Ellis had a brother John Roberts who had no children and married Eleanor William. Here are their wills.

Abington MM minutes: John Roberts of Gwynedd reported married to Eleanor William 1708-8-25, 1.1. p 60.

ROBERTS, JOHN. Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Yeoman. August 24, 1725. November 10, 1725. D. 435. Brother William Roberts. Cousins William, Daniel and James Williams; cousin Elizabeth daughter of George Lewis, Cadwalader David, Jane Jones, cousin Samuel Thomas. Francis Griffith, Margaret wife of Richard William. Executors: Wife Eleanor and brother Ellis Roberts (the latter became sole Executor, wife Eleanor being dead). Witnesses: Peter Wells and Robert Parry. [brother of William of Worcester]

ROBERTS, ELEANOR. Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Widow [of John Roberts]. September 2, 1725. November 16, 1725. D. 436. Sister Anne Roberts, cousin Katherine Roberts, brother Ellis Roberts. Nephews: William, Daniel and James Williams (Children of Anne Roberts who after marrying James Williams married Henry Bennett and Rowland Roberts). Sarah Pugh; Mary and Hannah Bennet. The wife of Humphrey Parker (name not given). Executors: Rowland Roberts and nephew Daniel Williams. Overseers: Evan Evans and John Jones. Witnesses: Thomas Wiet and Francis Griffith (of Towamencin, so John's property was probably near the Towamencin line).

Eleanor calls Anne the wife of Rowland Roberts a sister in this will. Anne is thought to be a Lewis as this is her last name in the Haverrford MM records when she married James Williams of Darby, smith. James Williams, blacksmith died 1707 in Cheltenham and Anne subsequently married Henry Bennett of Abington and third married Rowland Roberts of Montgomery township. Anne was a well known traveling Quaker minister who traveled all over America. Eleanor may be her sister in law, not a sister, or Eleanor married a William first also.

3d. It is likely that William, Ellis and John had a sister named Lowry Roberts who married David Jones.

Marriage: David Jones of Gwynedd, Lowry Robert of the aforsd twp., 24, 9th mo., 1704 at Gwynedd MH. Col. 1: Jane Robt, Ellin ffoulk, Jane Rees, Grace ffoulk, Margrett Jones, Jane Jones, Ann Edward. Col. 2: Thomas Evan, Hugh Griffith, Edd ffoulk, Robert Thomas, John Hugh, Owen Evan, Cadd. Evan, Meredith David, Robert Jones. Col. 3. Griffith Jones, Rees Price, Thomas ffoulk, Hugh ffoulk, Cadd ffoulk, Hugh Evan. Col 4 (under bride and groom): John Robert, Ellis Robert, William Roberts, Evan Robert, Cadd. Robert, Morris Robert, Evan Hugh, Robert Pugh, Nicholas Robert, Jon Davis, Rowland Robert.

Will abstract: DAVID JONES, Gwynedd, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. 1 mo. 23, 1732/3. May 16, 1733. E.239. Children: Cadwalader, David, Jane Harmer. Exec: Cadwalader Jones. Brothers-in-Law and Overseers: George Lewis, William Roberts. Wit: Samuel Adams, James Hardy (his mark), Jno. Evans.

From the first women's minutes at Gwynedd, it appears that Lowrey Jones was an overseer of Gwynedd monthly Meeting: 7mo 1717: William Harmer and Ellinor Richardson Declared their intentions of marriage with each other the first time and mary Polls & Lowrey Jones are appointed to inspect into her Clearness & Conversation and make report thereof att the next meeting.; 8 mo 1717: Edith Dawes & Lowrey Jones are by this meeting appointed to attend the service of the next Quarterly Meeting att Philadelphia. After this, Lowrey disappears from the minutes through 1721 and maybe beyond (she precedes her husband in death I would gather from the will).

Gwynedd MM records page 44-1. David Jones, wife Lowry. Children: Jane b. 7-15-1705. Cadwallader b. 11-11-1708. David b. 6-4-1713. John b. 3-27-1716.

David and Lowry had four known children and John probably died young. Here is a descendancy interspersed with the Gwynedd Minutes. Note this is not the David Jones (b. Citalgarth, Merioneth, Wales, d. Montgomery twp., PA) who married Katherine James and founded one of the largest Gwynedd Meeting families.

1. Jane Jones married (September 1729) Joshua Harmer (son of William Harmer and Ruth of Upper Dublin twp)

Gwynedd MM: 1729-7-30. Jane Jones and Joshua Harmer should have been reported married.

Joshua Harmer: 1745 Philadelphia Co. Land owners (100 acres)

will abstract: JOSHUA HARMER, Springfield, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. April 11, 1759. Proved March 15, 1760. Philadelphia County will book L.404.
Wife: Jane.
Children: Leah, Elias, Joseph, Benjamin, Oner, Keziah.
Exec: Oner Harmer.
Trustee: Joseph Morris.
Wit: Joseph Ashmead, Thos. Rose, Margaret Rose

2. Cadwallader Jones

189-1. 1735-2-29. Cadwallader Jones married contrary to discipline, offered an account.

3. David Jones

3e. Jane Roberts m. George Lewis

George Lewis is identified as a brother in law in the will of William Roberts.

George is the son of Thomas Lewis of Montgomery who was described thusly by Howard Jenkins (1897) in Historical Collections of Gwynedd:

"Among the very earliest settlers in Montgomery was Thomas Lewis, a native of Wales, who in 1701 bought 484 acres in the south corner of the township from Thomas Fairman. He was, no doubt, a Friend. He died in the summer of 1723, leaving 280 acres of his farm to his son George, 150 acres to his son Richard, and 50 to a grandson, Thomas. George Lewis married, in 1708, Jane Roberts, and was a prominent member of Gwynedd meeting. The memorial of him by the monthly meeting says "he was a native of Wales, of a peaceable and inoffensive life and conversation. He was an elder thirty years, even to his death, which was on the 9th of 12th month, 1752, in the 72d year of his age." He left but one child, Elizabeth, who married, in 1728, Isaac Jones, of whom some details will be given below."

George Lewis left a will:

LEWIS, GEORGE. Montgomery, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. 7 mo. 10, 1750. December 23, 1752. K.27.
Daughter: Elizabeth, wife of Isaac Jones.
Grandchildren: Daniel, Jane, Ruth and Isaac Jones.
Exec: Isaac Jones, son-in-law, and Edward Hugh, cousin.
Overseers: Rowland Evans, John Williams.
Wit: Daniel Morgan, John Evans, John Evans, Jr.

About Isaac Jones, the husband of Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of George, Howard Jenkins adds: "Isaac Jones came to Montgomery while quite a young man. He was the son of David and Katherine Jones, who came from Wales in 1699, and settled at Merion. Isaac was born 7th mo. 5, 1708, and married 1728, Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of George, she being eighteen and he twenty. Notwithstanding this early marriage, they "lived happily together" for seventy years. Old George Lewis, it is said, made an agreement with them a few years before his death, by which he gave them a life right in his real estate, in return for food and clothes, a room in his house, the use of a riding-horse, and two barrels of cider a year. He reserved the right to cook for himself, if he preferred, in which case they were to pay him 12 pounds a year, in lieu of the "diet".

Isaac Jones had purchased, in 1746, some land of Thomas Lewis, jr. On this he built, in 1765, a large brick house, which stood for more than a century. In it, in 1798, he died, past the age of ninety, and his wife, surviving two years, attained an equal age. Their son Isaac married Gainor Ambler, and this couple also died in the old house, after a married life of nearly seventy years, --Isaac, in 1840, aged 93, and Gainor, June 20, 1847, in her 92d year. Isaac's sister Ruth, who had lived there all her life, died in the same house, at the age of 88; and Mary Roberts, daughter of Eldad, who made her home with the Joneses, died there also, in 1859, aged nearly 93. This house, which was pulled down some years ago, stood in the extreme south corner of the township, on a cross road from the turnpike to the Horsham road."

Isaac and Elizabeth lost a child on the 8 of August 1745 in the great epidemic that killed half the children of Gwynedd Meeting. (name not given) He left a will which we add here abstracted:

JONES, ISAAC. Montgomery. April 11, 1794. May 15, 1799. 2.103
To wife Elizabeth, 2 featherbeds, furniture and farm. To daughter Ruth, 300 pds. and featherbed and bible. To grandchildren of son Daniel and daughter Jane, 20 s. each. To son Isaac, land unsold and rem. of personalty. Execs: Son Isaac and George Maris. Wit: Nathan Cleaver, John Evans.

Isaac's daughter Jane married Eldad Roberts (and they had children Elizabeth b. July 30, 1764 m. Isaiah Mullen, and Mary b. March 23, 1766 who lived with her uncle Isaac). His son Daniel married Margaret Moore, the daughter of Mordecai Moore and Elizabeth Coleman, January 10, 1765 at Plymouth Meeting House. Son Isaac married Gainor Ambler, the daughter of John Ambler and Ann Foulke.

3f. Evan Roberts married Jane Evan

He was one of the original settlers of Gwynedd township (1698) and his property is on Howard Jenkins' map of Gwynedd about 1700, in the area now part of Lower Gwynedd near Ambler with 100 acres. He is on the 1734 tax list for Gwynedd township. He is listed with brothers William, John and Ellis as a group on the marriage certificates of sisters Lowery and Jane. The lack of mention of the children of this famly in the Gwynedd Meeting records make me suspect they are not Quakers - perhaps they belong to Montgomery Baptist. His marriage to Jane Evan is in the Radnor MM records: Evan Roberts, Gwynedd m. Jane Evan, daughter of Evan Pugh of Gwynedd, at Gwynedd meeting house, 3rd mo 3, 1709. This marriage, before the founding of the monthly meeting at Gwynedd in 1714, would not be inconsistent with Baptists at that time, as the Baptist church was not founded until a decade later, and there was no other church or meeting around except Gwynedd. The disowning of people for marrying out of the Quaker meeting did not happen until later at Gwynedd. Thomas Allen Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, p. 207) calls this Evan Robert, "of near, Bala, Mer.; s of Robert ___, Rmd. to Gwynedd, Penna., 1698, Ch. E. Freeholder of 100 acres land in Gwynedd." If they were of the established church, the nearest place of worship was in Whitemarsh.

Evan Robert left a will that was proved 1761 which names his children:

EVAN ROBERTS, Gwynead, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. 5 mo. 24, 1750. July 25, 1761. M.153. Children: David, Robert, Ellis, William and Grace. Trustees: John Roberts, William Foulke. Exec: Wife Jane and son William. Wit: John Jones, Thomas [his mark] and Rowland Evans. Codicil: 8 mo. 6, 1752. Wit: Rowland Evans, Edward Evans.

His wife Jane also left a will about 1773 naming the same children:

JANE ROBERTS. Widow of Evan Roberts (decd.) Gwynedd. Phila. Co. August 23, 1763. January 23, 1773. Children: Robert, David, Ellis, William, Grace. Exec.: William Roberts. Trustees: Joshua Richards, Evan Evans. Wit: Methusalem Evans, David Akhoff, Chas. Maycock. P.348.

The birthdates of two of their children can be found in the Gwynedd MM records (which also names an additional daughter Jane): page 66-1 Evan w. Jane ch: Grace b. 3-20-1710; Jane b. 9-15-1711.

There are a number of other records naming Evan Roberts in the records, but I am not yet sure which go with which. The only one possible for this man is on page 354-1 dated 1746-6-26 where an Evan Robert is disowned. The other Evan Roberts to whom this record could belong at Gwynedd are Evan, son of William and Ann Jones Roberts (above) and Evan son of John and Jane of Abington who witnesses a will in Montgomery township in 1757, and probably has removed there.

Given the list of Evan and Jane's children, the question could be asked if Ellis (3b), John (3c) and William Roberts (3a) are the children of Evan and Jane. I don't know the answer to this question.

Jane is the daughter of Evan and Grace Pugh and is mentioned in her father's will:

EVAN PUGH, Gwynedd, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. January 16, 1725/6. November 2, 1728. E.90. Wife: Grase. Children: Ellin, Cadwalader, Hugh, Evan. Sons-in-Law: Evan Roberts, Robert Hugh (m. Sarah Evan), John Richard. Brother: Robert. Exec: Grase Pugh. Wit: Thomas Foulke, Hugh Foulke. [Children above of Evan Pugh probably all surnamed Evan, but could be Pugh.]

4. William Roberts (son of Edward) m. Anne Evans. Since this William also married an Ann, he can be confused with the William Roberts who m. Ann Jones.

Descendants of William Roberts

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM ROBERTS (EDWARD) was born Abt. 1695 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1747 in Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co,. PA. He married ANN EVANS August 25, 1715 in Gwynedd Meeting, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, daughter of ROBERT EVANS and ELLEN. She was born Abt. 1697 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co,. PA, and died 1761 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co,. PA.

Marriage certificate: William Robert, blacksmith son of Edward of Merion dec'd m. Anne Evans d/o Robert, of Gwynedd at Gwynedd mh 6th mo 25, 1715; Witnesses signing under the bride and groom: Robert Evan, Anne Robert, Mathew Robert, John Robert, Robert Roberts, Owen Roberts, Joseph Robert, Edward Robert, Evan Evans, John Roberts, Alice Robert, Hugh Evan, Robert Evan, Evan Evans, Owen Evan, Richard Evans, Thomas Lawrance, Robert Jones, Rowland Hugh, Richard Kinderdine, William Musgrave, John William, Jno Evans, Ellin Evans. Middle column: Sarah Jones, Mary William, Sarah Owen, Jane Fletcher, Rebecca Rees, Jane Pugh, Catherine Wm, Jane Evans, Susana Rich, Jane Richard, Sarah Jarman, Gwen Ffoulk, Jane Jones, Gainor Jones, Katherine Griffith, Ellin Hugh, Gainor Humphrey, Gwen Ffoulke, LINE, Owen Owens, John Jones, Arthur Jones, Thomas Lloyd. Col 1: Griffith Owen, Ellis Pugh, Row Ellis, Rees Thomas, David Harry, Robt Jones, Row Ellis Jr., John Jones, Robt Pugh, Edward Griffith, Rees Thomas Jr. Lewis, Walker, Edward ffoulke, Jno Humphrey, Thomas Fletcher, Jno Bevan, Thomas ffoulke, John Jones, Owen Evans, Cadwalader Evan, John Hugh, Robert Pugh.

From this marriage certificate, it appears that this William is the brother of John, Owen, Edward and Joseph Robert, who are the sons of Edward Roberts, born in Of Pen y Clwyd, Denbighshire, Wales and died in Merion twp. Edward was said to be a miller, possibly working in brother John Robert's mill on Mill Creek, Merion twp. His son Owen was, like William Roberts of Gwynedd, a blacksmith. Edward Robert, the father, died about 1715 in Merion township. This Edward had probably two other brothers besides John Roberts "of the Mill." named Matthew and William, the latter dying fairly young and leaving orphans who were raised by their uncle Mathew. There is a different version of this in a recent article in the Bulletin of the Historical Society of Montgomery County Pennylvania, Vol. XXXIV, pps. 110-114 entitled "The Mystery of Edward Roberts", by John J. Hagan (I have made his William, son of Edward Sr., the brother of Edward Sr. instead, as this William dies young and has a brother named Matthew, while Owen Roberts names his brother William exectuor in his will long afterwards). There is yet another version in The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA) Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, A.M.(Elizabeth Hanebury transcriber) HERE (near bottom) and HERE (under Owen Roberts)(She makes the brothers sons of Edward in the first reference like here, but sons of Matthew in the second reference).

i. ELLEN ROBERTS, b. 5 mo. (July) 21, 1716.

ii. EDWARD ROBERTS, b. 9 mo. (November) 17, 1717, Worcester twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. July 27, 1745, Gwynedd MM Burial Records, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. Gwynedd burials show Edward son of William Robert and Anne d. 27 Jul 1745 in the great epidemic.

iii. ROBERT ROBERTS, b. 7 mo. (Sept.) 28 1719, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. Abt. 1789, Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co., PA;

2. iv. ANN ROBERTS, b. 12 mo. (February) 02, 1720, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

3. v. WILLIAM ROBERTS, 7 mo. (Sept.) 14 1722, Of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia now Montgomery Co., PA.

vi. EVAN ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1723. d. abt 1790 in or near Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co., PA

The following is a preliminary placement of this Evan, based on data given me by Michael Cook of Perkiomenville, PA. The alternative placement is Evan Roberts, son of William Roberts and Ann Jones. Because of the location in 1774 of this family in Gwynedd (not Worcester) I have placed this family here instead. However, the Whitpain location for the birth of Edward Roberts makes this assignment tenuous.

Evan Roberts' wife was named Mary. He had 2 known children, Elizabeth [Eliza] Roberts who married Charles Bisson in 1774 and a son Edward who gave his birth date and location as May 7th, 1758, in Whitpain. This statement was made on his Rev. war pension application and Elizabeth Eliza’s widow pension for her husband’s service stated that she was married March 8th. 1774 at her father’s house (Evan Roberts) at his home in Gwynedd."

The following is a partial transcription of her deposition:

"That the said Charles Bison previous to death obtained from the United States a pension and from the State of Pennsylvania a gratuity for his military services in the Revolutionary War , she further declares that she was married to the said Charles Bison on the 8th of March in the year seventeen hundred and seventy four at her father’s house in Gwynedd township now in Montgomery County afore said (then Philadelphia County) by Phillip Rapp a church minister in the presence of her father Evan Roberts, and mother Mary Roberts, and brother Edward Roberts, Nicolas Selsor, Mary Selsor, Sarah Morgan, Sarah and Ann Ray, Enoch & Daniel Morgan, the said Phillip Rapp the minister and all the witnesses present at her marriage are all now dead." [JQ - Phillip Rapp was a Lutheran minister, serving in Germantown and in Bucks County]

In the year 1827 after the decease of her husband she applied for and obtained from the State of Pennsylvania a gratuity of forty dollars a year on account of the military services rendered by her husband. She then procured the affidavit of the said Edward Roberts to prove her marriage with the said Charles Bison which affidavit she expects is now on file at Harrisburg Penna. She knows of no record that was kept of her marriage. She had for many years a marriage certificate but it has for many years been lost or destroyed a long time since. She had nine children by the said Charles Bison six of whom are now living. And she further declares that her husband the afore said Charles Bison died on the twenty eighth day of March in the year one thousand and eight hundred twenty six and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as well more fully appear by reference proof hereto annexed.
(end of quote from Michael Cook)

Generation No. 2

2. ANN ROBERTS (WILLIAM, EDWARD) was born December 02, 1720 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. She married OWEN EVANS. (is this Owen son of Robert Evans of Gwynedd (s/o Owen) and Robert's wife Ellin Griffith? Or is he the son of Thomas Evans (s/o Owen) and Thomas' wife Elizabeth Griffith?... In either case he is born about 1720. Did one of these two Owens of Gwynedd marry Mary Harlan in Chester County?)

The name of the husband and children are from her mother's will.

Children of ANN ROBERTS and OWEN EVANS are:

i. ISAIAH EVANS.

ii. ELIZABETH EVANS.

iii. JOAN EVANS.

3. WILLIAM ROBERTS (WILLIAM, EDWARD) was born Abt. 1721 in Of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia now Montgomery Co., PA. He married ANN ROBERTS June 17, 1746 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia Co., PA, daughter of WILLIAM ROBERTS and ANNE JONES. She was born Abt. 1724, and died in Of Worcester twp., Philadelphia Co., PA.

Notes for WILLIAM ROBERTS: William Robert, s/o William of Gwynedd m. Ann Roberts d/o William of Worcester at Gwynedd mh 4th mo 17, 1746. Not in mother's 1761 will.

Children of WILLIAM ROBERTS and ANN ROBERTS are:

i. TACY ROBERTS.

ii. PHEBE ROBERTS.

5. Sons of Robert Ellis and his wife Ellin who took the last name Roberts

On a BBC web page is contained information about Robert Ellis (from vol. 8 part 3 1979 of the 'Journal of the Merioneth Historical and Record Society') which reads: "Assistance, however, came in 1690 to Robert Ellis, of Penllyn, a poor Friend, who proposed to leave for Pennsylvania with his wife and children. Montgomeryshire and Shropshire Friends agreed to send £5 to Bala and Merioneth Friends to subscribe a further £10. There was added a prudent caveat that the money was to be refunded if Ellis did not go. " A descendant adds, "Robert Ellis and his wife Ellin and their seven children emigrated to Pennsylvania from the Quaker quarterly meeting at Tydden y Gareg, the county of Merioneth in 1690. I have the text of the certificate issued by that quarterly meeting to the "beloved Friends and Brethern in the Province of Pennsylvania" on May 28, 1690." Robert Ellis died December, 1697 in Radnor township, Chester (now Delaware) Co., PA.

Merion in the Welsh Tract (by Thomas Allen Glenn) pps 284-6.

"In their certificate of removal from Wales, Robert Ellis and his wife are described as being 'Preachers of righteousness to and amongst their neighbors, " and having been "convinced of the truth about twenty years before' [1690]. The first son, Abel, married Mary Price in 1701, and to his marriage certificate, in the family column under the name of himself and wife, appear the names of Moses Robert, Ellis Roberts, Aaron Roberts and Evan Robert, which are the names of four of the children of Robert Ellis, as given in his letter of removal, and undoubtedly these four were his children and the brothers of Abel."

Glenn continues, "He and his wife and seven children, Abel, Moses, Ellis, Aaron, Evan, Rachel and Jane, came to this country in 1690. They were probably both of middle age (perhaps 45 to 50 years old) when they came over.

In The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA) Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, A.M. (transcribed by Elizabeth Hanebury) are records of the burials of both Ellin and Robert Ellis, who are described as “Preachers of Righteousness.” Ellin was buried at Merion MH on 6 mo., 15, 1697. Harvey has more to say (follow the link).

Daughter Jane married Griffith Hugh, son of Hugh Griffith of Gwynedd at Gwynedd Meeting House 10mo. 2, 1718.

5a. Ellis Roberts m. Elizabeth Pugh

ELLIS ROBERTS was born Abt. 1689 in Merioneth Wales or Radnor twp., Chester Co., PA, and died between 1773 and 1775 in Norriton twp, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married ELIZABETH PUGH November 5, 1712 in Pennsylvania, daughter of ELLIS PUGH and SINAH. She was born December 1690 in Pennsylvania.

His marriage:  Ellis Roberts, of Radnor, blacksmith, son of Robert Ellis (deceased), and Elizabeth Pugh, daughter of Ellis, of Plymouth 9th-mo. 5, 1712. At Plymouth meeting-house. Witnesses: Job, Jane, and Mary Pugh; Moses, Aaron, Evan, Rachel, Jane and Mary Roberts; Thomas and Jane Ellis and others.

Gwynedd MM records as abstracted by Hinshaw combines his family with that of Ellis Roberts m. Elizabeth Thomas: page 67-1 Ellis, wife Elizabeth children: Ellin b. 7-24-1713; Jane 8-16-1714; Moses 9-21-1715; Aubrey 3-24-1716; Ann 1-20-1717, Sinai 6-10-1717; Robert 7-4-1718; Deborah 9-7-1719; Reuben 8-27-1720; Rachel 12-20-1721; John 5-6-1723; Aaron 12-7-1728. Aaron may be a son of this Ellis, as this is a family name. I am not sure who Deborah belongs to. Aubrey, Ann, Robert and John belong to the other Ellis Roberts, who married Elizabeth Thomas. Ellin is possibly the same person that Catherine Roberts calls Elizabeth Keith in her will of 1766.

He left a will:

ELLIS ROBERTS, Norriton, Phila. Co. Yeoman. made 6th of 9th month 1773. Proved January 14, 1775.
Wife: Mary.
Children: Levi, Ann, Simeon (wife Prudence), Moses, Jane Goodwin and Reubin.
Grandchildren: Jacob and Joseph Goodwin.
Execs.: sons Reuben and Levi.
Wit: Jos. Roberts, Jacob Rhoads and Jno. Jacobs. Philadelphia County Q.92.

There are several wills which name his children, notably that of his unmarried daughter Catherine:

CATHERINE ROBERTS, Phila. Co. Housekeeper. 9 mo. 25, 1766. Proved 25 October 1766. Sisters: Rachael Williams, Elizabeth Keith, Ann Roberts. Sena Roberts and Jane. Father: name not given. Cousins: Catherine Williams and Rachel Morgan. Brothers: Moses, Reuben, Levi and Simeon. Execs.: Joseph Roberts and Elizabeth Meredith. Overseers: John Bell and Michael Pugh. Wit: Hannah Dickinson and Moses Roberts. Philadelphia Co. Will Book O.36.

Here is the will of his father in law, a well known Quaker minister.

ELLIS PUGH, Philadelphia. Mason. November 29, 1718. March 16, 1718. D. 116. Sons Thomas, Job and Ellis. Son-in-law Ellis Roberts; grand-daughters Katherine and Mary Meridith; Sinah Pugh; grand-son Ellis Pugh; daughter Ellin Davids. Wife's name not given. Executor: Son Job. Overseers: Son-in-law Meredith Davids, David Meredith, John Moore and Robert Jones. Witnesses: John Moore, Wan Griffith, Cadwallader Jones and Robert Jones.

Here is the will of his wife's sister Ellen. She makes him executor in 1733, so he is still alive then (and living in Norriton twp.). She also names Ellis Roberts' daughters, calling them cousins.

ELLIN DAVID, Plymouth, Co. of Philadelphia. Widow [of Meredith David]. 8 mo. 10, 1733/4. June 3, 1734. E.279. Brother: Job Pugh. Children: Moses, Aron, Mary, Sarah, Catherine. Brother-in-Law: Ellis Robert. Cousins: Catherine, Jane, Ellin, Sinai and Rachel Roberts, Catherine Pugh. Exec: Job Pugh, Ellis Robert. Overseers: Evan, Owen and John Evans. Wit: Joseph Jones, Myles Thomas.

I believe that this Ellis is the son of Robert Ellis (d. Radnor twp., Chester Co., PA 1697) and his wife Ellen.

At some point Ellis Roberts leaves Gwynedd township and removes to Norriton township as that is where he is found on the 1734 Philadelphia County tax list.

The last mention of this Ellis that I know of is as an overseer of the estate of Aaron Roberts of Norriton twp. (another son of Robert Ellis and Ellen) in 1748. Perhaps his family leaves Philadelphia County around this time as I have not seen any marriages of his children.

Birthdates for the children are from the Gwynedd records.

Children of ELLIS ROBERTS and ELIZABETH PUGH are:

i. ELIZABETH ROBERTS (perhaps ELLIN, b. in the Gwynedd records 7 (Nov)-24-1713?) who married a KEITH

ii. JANE ROBERTS b. 8 (Oct)-16-1714 married a Goodwin and had children named Jacob and Joseph per her father's will.

Abstracts of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Wills 1784-1823 by Ellwood Roberts

I suspect his son Jesse is the one who married Elizabeth.

Gwynedd MM records
126-5 1791-1-25 Jesse Roberts offerred an account for his marriage out of unity
19-6 1828-5-29 Jesse Roberts disowned for joining the Hicksites by the Orthodox Meeting

The remaining part of the old Holstein tract around Swede's Ford (now part of Bridgeport, PA), that Levi Bartleson got possession of by intermarriage with Mary Holstein, was purchased by Jesse Roberts in 1795 which he held until 1800, when he sold it to Samuel Holstein.

Jesse Roberts (m. Elizabeth) is the father of Jesse Roberts who married his distant cousin Rachel Roberts (daughter of John and Rachel (Shoemaker) Roberts).

Gwynedd MM records

Philadelphia MM: Simeon Roberts, son of Ellis, received on certificate from Gwynedd MM

Philadelphia MM; 1763, 1, 28. Simeon Roberts condemned for a marriage contrary to discipline. I believe he married someone named Prudence.

5b. Evan Roberts (brother of Ellis m. Eliz. Pugh) who married Anne Thomas

Evan Roberts is another son of Robert Ellis and Ellen and is the brother of the Ellis Roberts who marries Elizabeth Pugh.

He married Anne Thomas, daughter of William Thomas:

Evan Roberts, son of Robert Ellis of Radnor, yeoman, dec'd, and Anne Thomas, daughter of William of the same place, yeoman, at Radnor Meeting House, 11 mo., 9, 1716. Wit: Ellis, Aaron, Jane, Mary, Catharine and Rachel Roberts; William, Mary, Thomas, John, William, Rees and Martha Thomas, etc.

5c. Aaron Roberts m. Sarah Longworthy of Norriton twp.

Aaron is also a brother of Evan and Ellis, sons of Robert Ellis and Ellen. He appears in the Gwynedd MM records too as he lived in Norriton twp. This is the main Roberts family associated with Plymouth Meeting.

Thomas Allen Glenn, Merion in the Welsh Tract, p. 285:  "Aaron, the fourth child, was probably 8 or 10 years old [when the family came to America] in 1690. He bought land in Norriton (now in and about Norristown) in 1714 and married Sarah Longworthy of Radnor, in 1727."

8, 6, 1727. Aaron Roberts of Plymouth married Sarah Longworthy of Radnor, at the dwellinghouse of Meredith David, late dec’d., in Plymouth. Wit: Ellis and Elizabeth Roberts; Benjamin and Jane Longworthy; William Williams, etc. (Haverford, now Radnor MM records)

3. MOSES ROBERTS (AARON, ROBERT ELLIS) was born Bef. 1737 in Philadelphia Co., PA, and died November 1788 in Berks Co., PA. He married JANE LEE April 09, 1767 in Exeter Friends Mtg., Berks Co., PA, daughter of THOMAS LEE and ELLIN ELLIS. She was born February 11, 1739/40 in Berks Co., PA.

From Quaker History, Vol. 90 (2) 24-26 (journal article by Karen Guenther entitled, A Crisis of Allegience: Berks County, Pennsylvania Quakers and the War for Independence). - Moses Roberts married a daughter of Thomas Lee, a leader of Exeter MM and removed from Oley twp., Berks to Catawissa, Northumberland Co., PA, where he was one of those requesting the formation of a Preparative Meeting in 1775. "On 9 April 1780, representatives of the Northumberland County sheriff imprisoned five residents, inculding two Quakers, Moses Roberts and Job Hughes. When they arrived at the county seat, a military officer ordered them to jail without pressing any official charges. A few days later, a judge finally questioned them about the suspected crimes of high treason and of cooperating with the Indians. All of the prisoners denied passing messages along to the British or to the Indians and contended that the only Indian they had seen since the beginning of the war was 'one Dead one, that went down the River in a Canoe.' They also did not know who had gone to aid the Indians, although they had heard reports of such activity. After the questioning, the law enforcement officials told them that they all would be leaving the County for another jail unless they posted 10,000 pounds bail each and promised not to appear in the county for the rest of the war. None of the prisoners could afford the bail, so the sheriff ordered their removal to the jail in Lancaster. The imprisonment of Moses Roberts and Job Hughes prompted requests for assistance. In July 1780, Jane Roberts and Eleanor Hughes appealed to Chief Justice Thomas McKean, pleading for the release of their husbands. They contended that county officials had unjustly arrested their spouses, and that they too had suffered since then. Armed men had forced the Roberts and Hughes families to leave their homes without warning, not even allowing them to prepare food to sustain themselves on their journey back to their fathers' home in Oley township. Their property losses included livestock, crops, furniture, a sawmill, a gristmill, and 'a Chest of Carpenters toools which we were burying underground when the men came upon us.' The soldiers also confiscated four horses, leaving the women with only two mares to use to transport their families and personal effect. In October, Exeter Monthly Meeting appointed a committee to visit the two women to inquire into their circumstances and raised 5 pounds for the families' support... The appeals of the Meeting for Sufferings and of Roberts and Hughes had little impact, as the assembly refused to consider the cases of the two men, and Chief Justice McKean ignored the please for justice. Finally, in mid-1781, the Lancaster County sheriff released the two men, perhaps recognizing that they no longer posed a threat to the commonwealth."

Generation No. 1

1. OWEN ROBERTS was born 1664 in Wales, and died 1722 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married MARY HUGHES (no source for last name?). She died Aft. 1722.

will abstract: ROBERTS, OWEN. Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Yeoman. January 25, 1719. April 16, 1722. D. 308. Son Robert, daughter Lydia Mendenhall. Executrix: Wife Mary. Overseers: John Hugh and John Humphrey. Witnesses: Thomas Foulke and John Evans.

Howard Jenkins p. 424 considers this family unrelated to all other Roberts families of Gwynedd. "Owen Roberts, tailor, whose daughter Lydia married Benjamin Mendenhall, lived below Pennlyn, having bought in 1714 the lower William John tract of his (W.J.'s) daughters, Gaynor, Ellen and Catherine Jones. Besides his daughter Lydia, he had a son, and possibly other children."

A descendant (Susan Kimura) on the Roberts Genforum (#5130) says that Owen and wife Mary emigrated to Chester Co., PA in 1708 and were married previously in Montgomeryshire, Wales. She further states that Mary had a son from a previous marriage named Ellis Lewis (see note under daughter Lydia below).

Children of OWEN ROBERTS and MARY HUGHES are:

Letter requesting consent of parents for marriage...

" Concord, ye 20 of 6th mo. 1716

Beloved Friends

Owen Roberts and Mary, his wife

Our love is unto you and to your son and daughter. Nowe this is to let you understand that our son Benjamin had made us acquainted that he has a kindness for your daughter Lydia and desired our consent thereon, and we, having well considered of it and know nothing in our minds against his proceeding therin, have given our consent that he may proceed orderly, that is to have your consent and not to proceed without it. And it is our desire that you will give your consent. Also now, as touching his place that we have given him to settle on, we shall say but little at present.

Ellis Lewis knows as well of our minds and can give you as full account of it as we can if we were with you, but if you will be pleased to come down, we shall be very glad to see you or either of you, and then you might satisfy yourselves.

Now we desire you, when satisfied, to return us an answer, in the same way as we have given you our minds.

No more, but our kind love to you and shall remain

Your loving Friends

7. The John Roberts of Abington (m. Jane) line appears to be recorded at Gwynedd when their son John marries Mary Dawes.

JOHN ROBERTS (JOHN) was born Abt. 1702 in Abington twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA (son of John Roberts of Abington and Jane). He married MARY DAWES August 15, 1723 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia Co., PA, daughter of FRANCIS DAWES and MARGARET GRIFFITH. She was born 1 mo (March) 25, 1705 in of Montgomery twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

Abington MM: John Jr. granted certificate to Gwynedd MM 1723-3-27

Gwynedd MM:

John Roberts s/o John of Abington m. Mary Dawes d/o Francis of Montgomery at Gwynedd mh 6th mo 15, 1723. Wit: Jno Roberts, Jane Rbts, Francis Dawes, Margaret Dawes, Hugh Griffith, Adren Dawes, Joseph Nailor, Lewis Rbt, Richd Kenderdine, Tho Kenderdine, David Hugh, Griffith Hugh, Edw. Dawes, Jno Dawes, Evan Hugh, Abraham Dawes, Joseph Dawes, Hugh Griffith, David Griffith, Jno William., Cadd Morris, Cadd Evans, Rowland Evans. middle column: Jane Hugh, Mary Spencer, Katherine Lester, Bridget Griffith, Jane Hugh, Jane Evans, Edith Dawes, etc.

It is good that Jane signs this certificate, or the confusion with the John m. Mary Kilcup line (below) would be total.

Soon after this marriage, numerous children to John and Mary Roberts are recorded in the Gwynedd birth records.

John Roberts bought 80 acres from Griffith Miles in Montgomery in 1721 and 183A adjoining from Ezra Price, part of Alexander Edward's original tract near Montgomery Square. He left these tracts to son John Jr. The Knapp farm house (on National Historic Register) is on this property and may have been his home. John Jr. quickly lost "the considerable fortune and property that he inherited and his land was sold for taxes in 1763. The farm was purchased by James Stroud of Plymouth Meeting." - source: James S. Williams, "An Erudite Little Township" (1979, found in the library of the Historical Society of Montgomery County). The property was sold by Stroud to Dr. Charles Moore in 1770.

The John who marries Mary Dawes is still alive 1739 as his father-in-law makes him an executor of his will:

DAWES, FRANCIS. Montgomery, Philadelphia County. 10 mo. 11, 1739. March 15, 1739. F.153. Wife: Margaret. Children: Hannah, Andrew, Mary and Catharine. Exec: Son-in-law John Roberts and daughter Hannah. Kinsmen and Overseers: John Jones and John Evans. Wit: Moses Peters and Thomas Bates (his mark).

and he files his own will in Montgomery township:

ROBERTS, JOHN. Montgomery, Co. of Philadelphia. 1 mo. 14, 1756. February 8, 1757. K.493. Children: John, Owen, Margaret, Katherine, Mary and Jane. Guardians and Trustees: Brother Evan Roberts, brother-in-law Thomas Kenderdine and cousins, John Jones and John Evans. Exec: Wife Mary and son John. Wit: Daniel Morgan, John Bartholomew, Evan Jones.

Other Children of John Roberts and Jane

Another son of John and Jane of Abington moves to Montgomery township in 1748: this is Evan Roberts who marries Margaret Walton (dau. Isaac of Moreland and Mary Parry Walton). Evan was granted certificate to Gwynedd MM with his wife 1748-1-28 from Abington MM. In 1756 Evan is witness to the will of Robert Thomas of Montgomery twp. He is a trustee on his brother John's will too. The list of siblings of the John Roberts who married Mary Dawes (that is, the children of John and Jane of Abington) is: 1. Dorothy m. Thomas Kenderdine; 2. Mary m. Isaac Cadwallader with children Jane, Elizabeth and Cadwallader (will 1745; in an act of ultimate genealogical confusion this Isaac Cadwallader married two women named Roberts whose fathers are named John and live in Abington - see also the John Roberts m. Mary Kilcup line below) 3. Richard; 4. Thomas m. Elizabeth; 5. Lewis (b. about 1690) m. Hannah (father's will calls her Susanna?) Williams. (Lewis stayed in Abington; this is an ancestral line for US President Ullyses S. Grant through daughter Hannah Roberts, who married John Simpson. Another son of Lewis Roberts is William Roberts, a colonel of militia from New Britain twp., Bucks, in the Revolution.); 6. Jane m. Joseph Naylor (they were members of Gwynedd MM); John m. Mary Dawes; 7. Evan m. Margaret Walton; 8. Ann m. Jacob Walton of Buckingham twp. The first mention of this line of Roberts (John m. Jane) in the Abington MM records is the declaration of marriage intentions for their daughter Jane who m. Joseph Naylor April 29, 1713 (Clarence Roberts 1940) - minutes which have been notoriously pruned on rewriting.

Confirmation of this list of siblings is found in John's father's will abstract:

ROBERTS, JOHN. Abington, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. May 27, 1733/4. June 19, 1733. E.247. Wife: Jane. Children: Jane Naylor, John, Lewis, Evan, Dorothy Kenderdine, Thomas, Richard, Mary, Anne. Exec: Jane, John and Lewis Roberts. Wit: Nicholas Austin, John Williams, Stephen Jenkins.

John's mother also leaves a will:

ROBERTS, JANE. Philadelphia County. Widow [wife of John of Abington]. January 11, 1740/1. September 16, 1745. H.38. Children: Thomas, Mary Cadwallder, Ann Walton, Evan, John and Lewis. Wit: Nicholas Austin and Stephen Jenkins.

Grandparents of John Roberts

There is some evidence that the parents of the John Roberts of Abington who married Jane is the son of Robert John and his wife Mary. This hypothesis also ties John Roberts of Abington to three other Roberts lines: (1) Mary Robert who married at Gwynedd Meeting Hugh Evan, son of Evan Pugh and Grace; (2) Edward Roberts who married Anne Humphrey; and (3) William Roberts of Whitpain who married Jane. The main pieces of evidence tying this family together are (a) the marriage certificate of Mary Robert (who names her father as Robert John who lived and died in Merioneth, Wales, has a Mary Jones signing where we would expect her mother to sign, and has Edward, John and William Roberts signing where we would expect her brothers to sign and has women named Anne, Ann, Jane and Jane Roberts sign)(b) the will of William Roberts of Whitpain (who names brother Edward).

all chldren born in Montgomery township.

Note: By way of warning when researching the John Roberts m. Jane line, be aware there are other unlrelated John Roberts lines at Abington.

1) There is the John Roberts m. Mary Kilcup line. This John Roberts leaves a will:

JOHN ROBERTS. Abington, Co. of Philadelphia. 3 mo. 9, 1735. April 27, 1735. E.333. Wife and Exec: Mary Roberts. Children: John and Daughters (no names). Trustees: Morris Morris, James Paul. Wit: John Webster, Jno. White, Alexr. Seaton.

His wife Mary also leaves a will:

MARY ROBERTS. Abington, Co. of Philadelphia. Widow. 1 mo. 9, 1756. April 5, 1762. M.266. Son: John, names of other children not given. Sons-in-Law: Phineas Jenkins and William Jenkins. Grandchildren: Sarah, Abraham, Mary, Margaret and Isaac Cadwalader, Mary Bowers. Wit: John Pemberton, John Brock, Charles Roberts. [a quick check on Worldconnect shows that John Roberts Jr. m. Barbara Shoemaker, Margaret Roberts m. Isaac Cadwalader and Mary Roberts m. Phineas Jenkins]

Thomas Allen Glenn, in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, appears to mean this man when he gives the following ancestry: "JOHN ROBERTS, of near Bala, co. Mer., cordwainer, son of Robert Lloyd, and grandson of John Lloyd. His uncle, Thomas Lloyd, of Llangower, yeoman, devised him 156 1/2 acres land in Pennsylvania, of which 76 1/2 acres were surveyed in Merion, and the balance in Goshen. John Roberts, who dropped the surname of Lloyd, removed to Pennsylvania, probably about 1700. Ch. E. He had also land in Goshen by gift or grant of Evan John William. He sold his Merion lands before 1703, and by deed 1720. Freeholder in Cheltenham, 1720. Wife, Mary." Sources: Deed Book C.I., No. 3, p. 228, Phiila; Deed Book X, p. 357, West Chester, PA - sale of Merion lands to Josiah Haines.

Some records from Philadelphia MM on births of their children are posted on a blog from Queitsch Hof which are consistent with the wills. This family uses the name Aquilla Roberts (their child by that name dies 1729/30), but I do not know how they connect (if they do) to the later Aquillas (including the one in Plymouth who is mentioned in the Gwynedd records during the Revolution). John Roberts and Mary Kilcup were married July 10, 1702 according to Philadelphia MM records as presented in this blog.

The mother of John Roberts (m. Mary Kilcup) was named Margaret, and she appears to have emigrated to Radnor MM, Pennsylvania from Wales in 1683 (Certificate for Margaret Jones) when she was already widowed. She married Rees Peters who had emigrated about the same time (Rees Peeters signs the marriage certificate of John Roberts of Pencoyd and Gainor Roberts, daughter of Hugh Roberts, the traveling Quaker minister, in 1684 at Merion Meeting)(reference: Charles Harper Smith (1939) The Livezey Family History). Rees Peters' will abstract:

REES PETERS. Abington, Co. of Philadelphia. Cordwainer. February 26, 1726/7. March 15, 1726. E.25.
Wife: Margaret.
Cousins: Benjamin, Thomas and Rees Peters, Mary Kite.
Son-in-Law: John Roberts. Poor Friends of Meeting.
Exec: Margaret Peters.
Wit: Morris Morris, Daniel Thomas, John Meredith.

i) son John Roberts m. Barbara Shoemaker

The list of children for their son John Jr. (m. Barbara Shoemaker) can be found in their wills:

Execs: Wife, Mary and sons Mordecai and James.
Wit: Thomas Webster, and William Roberts.

Jesse's sons Mordecai and Samuel married Shallcross sisters as revealed in their uncle Joseph's will:

JOSEPH SHALLCROSS, Township of Lower Dublin. County of Philadelphia, Penna. Farmer. September 18, 1824. November 13, 1824. 8.312.
Nephew: Joseph Shallcross. Nieces: Priscilla Roberts, widow of Samuel Roberts, Ann Roberts wife of Mordecai Roberts, John Yates, son of Joseph Yates, sister in law Rachel Rion, sister Mary Jones, children of Joseph Yates and James Yates and to the children of my nieces Priscilla and Ann Roberts.
Daughter Rachel Shallcross, decd.
Exec:Friends: Sereck Fox, George Fox.
Wit: John Foulkrod, Peter Arrison.

Daughter Hannah married first James Pedrick and second, May 12, 1774, Amos Harmer, son of John Harmer. This Amos Harmer is thought to be the son of John Harmer (a carpenter) and Catherine Statler and the grandson of George Harmer and Honour Oxley (George was born Wiltshire, England, emigrated to Philadelphia, 1682, d. 1732 Philadelphia, PA.)(genealogy from Dan Treadway)

ii) daughter Margaret Roberts m. Isaac Cadwallader

It appears from all the wills that Isaac Cadwallader committed an act of genealogical confusion, marrying two women with the same last name, both daughters of a John Roberts of Abington. By his first wife, Margaret, he had the children named in the will of Mary Kilcup Roberts (Abraham, Isaac, Mary, Margaret and Sarah). By his second wife, Mary the daughter of John and Jane Roberts, he had Elizabeth, Cadwallader and Jane who are named in Mary's will in 1745.

Bucks Co. will abstract: will book 1.--. ISAAC CADWALLADER, of Warminster. 9th mo., 10th day, 1739. Proved November 25, 1739.
Wife Mary. Children, Abraham, Isaac, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sarah. Father John Cadiwallader. Bro. Jacob. Thomas Kinderdine, John Roberts of Montgomery and John Roberts of Abington, guardians, Trustees, and Overseers. Brother-in-law Robert Comly and Bro. John Cadwallader, exrs.
Wit: John Cross, Joseph Naylor.

note John Roberts of Montgomery is a son of John and Jane Roberts. Thomas Kenderdine is married to Dorothy, daughter of John and Jane Roberts. John Roberts of Abington appears to refer to the man who married Barbara Shoemaker (both John Roberts Seniors having already died in 1739).

The parents of this Isaac Cadwallader are John Cadwallader (d. 1742 on a religious visit to the West Indies) and Mary Cassell.

The will abstract of Mary, daughter of John and Jane, the second wife of Isaac Cadwallader:

CADWALLEDER, MARY. Philadelphia County. Widow. July 27, 1745. September 16, 1745. H.39.
Daughters Jane, Elizabeth and Cadwalader, daughter of testator's husband by a former marriage.
Exec: Brothers John and Thomas Roberts.
Wit: Nicholas Austin and Stephen Jenkins.

iii) Elizabeth Roberts m. John Parry

This is an ancestral line for Alice Paul, the American Suffragist leader (Elizabeth Roberts was her great great grandmother).

2) There is an additional John Roberts line in Abington township (will abstract): ROBERTS, JOHN. Abington, Philadelphia Co. Yeoman. February 17, 1747. March 12, 1747. H.505. Children: Joseph, John, Mathew, Charles, Alice, Patience and Rachel. Sons-in-law: John Taylor, Joseph Walton and James Delworth. Exec: Son Charles. Wit: John Webster, William Webster and Malachi Jones. This John Roberts was born about 1670 and his daughter Sarah marries Joseph Walton. I am not sure who marries son in law James Dilworth (Possibly the son of the James b. 3 November 1695, Abington twp., who is also named James and who may be the one with wife Mary and a Philadelphia County will in 1793 [book W]). Malachi Jones is the minister at Abington Presbyterian Church. This family may be related in some way to the William Roberts who marries Ann Evans.

possibly related Gwynedd marriage record: William Robert s/o Edward of Merion dec'd m. Anne Evans d/o Robert, of Gwynedd at Gwynedd mh 6th mo 25, 1715; Witnesses signing under the bride and groom: Robert Evan, Anne Robert, Mathew Robert, John Robert, Robert Roberts, Owen Roberts, Joseph Robert, Edward Robert, Evan Evans, Jn Roberts, Alice Robert, Hugh Evan, Robt Evan, Evan Evans, Owen Evan, Richard Evans, Thomas Lawrance, Robert Jones, Rowland Hugh, Richard Kinderdine, William Musgrave, John William, Jno Evans, Ellin Evans.

These first names (Mathew, Joseph) also appear in the early names of one of the Merion township Roberts families ("Roberts of Mill Creek").

8. Edward Roberts m. Mary Bolton (with brief mention of the separate Thomas Robert line under Martha, daughter of Edward and Mary)

This is one of the Richland MM Roberts lines, but their children are recorded in the Gwynedd birth records while Richland is still part of Gwyned MM.

EDWARD ROBERTS was born 3 mo. (May) 1687 in Merionethshire, Wales, and died 11mo (Nov.) 25, 1768 in Richland, Bucks Co., PA. He married MARY BOLTON December 27, 1714 in Abington MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, daughter of EVERARD BOLTON and ELIZABETH. She was born January 04, 1687/88 in Cheltenham township, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died July 22, 1784 in Richland, Bucks Co., PA.

Clarence Roberts writes (Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks), "He came to Pennsylvania with 'his cousin', proabably an uncle, Thomas Lawrence, and resided for a number o years in Byberry. He became a member of Abington Monthly Meeting of Friends and married at that Meeting, on 10 mo. 27, 1714, Mary Bolton , daughter of Everard and Elizabeth Bolton who had come from Ross in Herefordshire, England in 1682 and settled in Milestown, on the York Road in Cheltenham Township. Everard Bolton was a prominent man in the community, filling the office of Justice of the Peace for many years and was treasurer of Abington Monthly Meeting for a period of forty years. In the spring of 1716, Edward Roberts moved with his family to the "Great Swamp" (Richland) on horseback and the first day after their arrival his wife broke out with small-pox and they had to return to Gwynedd to have her cared for. He settled about half a mile south of the present meeting house on a tract of 250 acres surveyed to him by Proprietary warrant dated 9 mo. 17, 1715. In 1729 he built a stone house on the banks of a creek, nearby on which were several Indian wigwams. Edward Roberts appeared in the ministry of the Society of Friends about 1725 and was the principal minister of Richland Friends meeting for many years."

Gwynedd Meeting Women's minutes show that Mary Roberts was one of three women who carried out the business of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting in "the swamp" (the others were Ann Foulke and Catherine Ball) during the formative period of Richland Meeting.

will abstract -- EDWARD ROBERTS, Richland. Bucks Co. Yeoman. 25 12th month 1760. January 10, 1769. Wife: Mary. Children: Nathan, Abel, John, David, Everard, Martha, Mary and Jane. Sons in law: John Roberts and Jno. Foulke. Monthly Meeting of Friends of Richland. Execs.: son Nathan and Thos. Foulke. Wit: Samuel Foulke, Thomas Stafford and Job Hughes. O.313.

This line and the Thomas Roberts m. Alice line are well covered by Clarence Roberts in his book Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks written in 1925.

Children of EDWARD ROBERTS and MARY BOLTON are:

i. MARTHA ROBERTS, b. October 16, 1715; d. January 26, 1768 Milford twp., Bucks Co., PA. m. John Roberts.

The John Roberts that Martha marries is from yet another Richland MM Roberts line -- The line of Thomas Robert (b. about 1685 Wales) and his wife Alice. Clarence Roberts writes "Thomas and Alice arrived in Philadelphia between 1715 and 1720 and settled along Butter Creek, Milford twp., Bucks Co., PA. They resided in a log house until 1740 or 1742 when they erected a stone house that was demolished in the late nineteenth century. The site is about a mile from Trumbauersville on the road from Rich Hill (then Bunker Hill) to Sumneytown, near the southeast corner of Milford twp." The children of Thomas and Alice are (1) John m. Martha Roberts; (2) Ann m. William Heacock; (3) Thomas m. Letitia Rhea; (4) Richard m. Rosamond Tyson; (5) Alice m. Edward Thomas; (6) Rachel; (7) William; (8) Abraham m. Catherine Lester. They too were Quakers. This is Clarence Roberts' direct line and is well covered in Chapter XLI of Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks (1925, by Clarence V. Thomas and Warren S. Ely, pps 468-496).

ii. ABEL ROBERTS, b. August 23, 1717. m. Gainor Morris d. 1779 in Richland twp., Bucks Co., PA d/o Morris Morris & Susannah Heath.

iii. JOHN ROBERTS, b. January 22, 1718/19, Richland, Bucks Co., PA; d. August 08, 1776, Milford twp., Bucks Co., PA. m. Margaret Enochs.

iv. DAVID ROBERTS, b. March 10, 1722/23, Richland, Bucks Co., PA; d. August 14, 1805, Richland twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, m. Phebe Lancaster d/o Thomas Lancaster and Phebe Wardell.

v. EVERARD ROBERTS, b. March 09, 1724/25. m. Ann Hoge d/o William Hoge and Ann.

vi. NATHAN ROBERTS, b. August 13, 1727, Richland twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania; d. December 10, 1806, Richland twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. unmarried.

vii. MARY ROBERTS, b. June 26, 1730, Richland, Bucks Co., PA; d. October 02, 1787, Richland, Bucks Co., PA. m. John Foulke 1722/3-1787, s/o Hugh Foulke and Ann Williams.

viii. JANE ROBERTS, b. January 03, 1732/33, Richland, Bucks Co., PA; d. July 25, 1822, m. Thomas Foulke 1723/4-1786, s/o Hugh Foulke and Ann Williams.

9. William Roberts of Whitpain twp. m. Jane

I haven't seen this man in the meeting records, so his will came as a bit of a surprise. He seems to be a brother of Edward m. Anne Humphrey (who dies less than a year after this William). He appears to live nearer the Norriton or Plymouth line than the Gwynedd line based on the witnesses that sign the will. Based on the marriage certificate of Mary Roberts who marries, 1716 at Gwynedd Meeting, Hugh Evan, is likely that Mary Robert and John Roberts of Abington are also his siblings and that his father was named Robert John and his mother was named Mary.

will abstract - WILLIAM ROBERTS, Whitpain, Co. of Philadelphia. Yeoman. 9 mo. 2, 1749/50. March 9, 1749. J.239. Wife: Jane. Children: Joseph, Margret and Jacob. Brother: Edward. Overseers: Edward Roberts, Joseph Jones. Exec: Jacob Roberts. Wit: Job Pugh, Griffith Hugh (his mark), James Wood.

He and his wife are found in the records of Abington and Goshen MM.

Goshen MM records: children born - Margaret 2-27-1714/5 & Jacob 11-13-1719/20; Goshen minutes page 41-1, 1725-3-7 William and Jane got certificate to Abington MM;

Abington MM:  1725-3-31 William Roberts received on certificate from Newtown, Chester Co., PA; William Roberts granted certificate to Gwynedd MM with unnamed wife, 1728-2-29.

Gwynedd MM records which may pertain to the children of this line:

Note that there is a Jacob son of Aubrey Roberts, but he is not born until about 1740 or later, so is not referred to below.

page 293-1 1742-11-25 Jacob Roberts and wife Jane offered an account for marriage contrary to disclipline
page 143-3 1772-10-27 Jacob Roberts and wife Jane disowned for disunity

Note that Joseph Roberts born September 11, 1729, son of Aaron and Sarah, is present in the records at the same time. Joseph, son of Aaron married Hannah Rees of Haverford in 1757. So what appears below is likely Joseph son of William of Whitpain.

page 122-2 1754-8-27 Joseph Roberts married contrary to discipline and offered an account
page 428-2 1765-11-26 Joseph son of William Roberts disowned for disunity

The above records indicate that William of Whitpain was born 1702 or earlier.

10. Ellis Roberts, died single in 1716

There is a third Ellis Roberts in Gwynedd who is not a Quaker but due to having a father of the same name can be confused with the one who married Elizabeth Pugh. He also names Elizabeth's father an executor and calls him a friend (holy coincidences!):

He died single and left a will:  ELLIS ROBERTS, Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Labourer. August 18, 1716. October 1, 1716. D. 58. Father Robert Ellis. Sister Catherine and her son John. Churches spoken of at Philadelphia, Oxford and Radnor. Mr. Tolbet, the priest at Philadelphia for service at his burial. Uncle Robert David of Merion; Uncle Edward Rees of Merion; Humphrey Bate; Ellis Pugh; Evan Ellis; Edward Thomas of Merion; Rowland Hugh; Thomas Foulk; Cadder Evan Pugh; Thomas David; Hugh Griffith; Evan Roberts; Robert Humphrey's wife whose name is not given; John Humphrey; Ellis Lewis; Humphrey Jones; Elizabeth Pugh; Gaynor Row; Hugh Jones. Executors: Friends Ellis Pugh and Evan Ellis. witnesses: Edward Foulke, Ellis Hughe and Hugh Foulke.

We think the uncle Robert David he named in this will, mentions a Margaret Robert in his will:

ROBERT DAVID, Merion, Prov. of Pennsylvania. Yeoman. April 26, 1732/3. October 18, 1732. E.194.
Wife: Elizabeth. Children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Jane. Brother: Ellis. Grandchildren: Children of Daughter Jane, Elizabeth, Jane and Robert David. Kinswoman: Margaret Robert.
For Grave Yard at Merion Meeting House.
Exec: Elizabeth (wife) and Elizabeth David.
Trustees: John Cadwalader, Robert Roberts, Robert Jones.
Wit: Robert Evans, Rees Lloyd, Robert Jones.

Thomas Allen Glenn Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania p. 62), offers a pedigree and a comment: "Robert David; he was of the township of Citalgarth, Llanfor, 1675. Removed to adjoining township of Gwernefel Ismydd, Llanycil; before 1682-3. Lived at "Tudygnant." Deed to him for 312 1/2 acres of land in Pennsylvania (executed in Wales) 18 March, 1681. (Deed Book C.I. folio 175, Philadelphia) Certificate of removal, Pennllyn Meeting, 5 mo. 18 1683." Robert David of Meron is covered in more detail by Margaret Harvey HERE.

The Uncle Edward Rees is covered in a secton (pps 92-7) of Merion in the Welsh Tract by Thomas Allen Glenn. The brothers and sisters of Edward Rees of Merion are Jane m. Cadwallader Morgan, Hannah m. Rees John William (she was later in 1722 to marry Thomas Evans of Gwynedd), a daughter who married John William and Thomas Price (spouse not named) who stayed in Wales. Edward Rees married (1) Mably [Mabby] Owen and (2) Rebecca Humphrey daughter of Samuel Humphrey and Elizabeth Rees. Edweard Rees is covered in some detail by Margaret Harvey HERE and his wife Rebecca is lower down on the same page.

11. Hugh Roberts m. Anne Thomas

He is unplaced and there is not even a mention of him in Worldconnect.

Thomas Allen Glenn (Welsh Founder of Pennsylvania, p. 209) calls him "of near Bala, Co. Merionethshire, husbandman", and says he removed to Gwynedd Pennsylvania and was a member of the Church of England in Wales. In Pennsylvania he was a Quaker.

Hugh Roberts, of Gwynedd married Ann Thomas, of Upper Merion, at Merion m.h., 7th mo. 30, 1703. Witnesses, Column 1 (male relatives). Thomas David, Thomas Edward, Owen Evan, David Jones, Griffith John, David Evan, David Gethin, John Griffith, Owen Gethun, Evan Griffith, Robert Evan, Edward Griffith, Peter Jones, Robert Robert, Cadd. Jones, Edd. Cadwalader. Col 2 (Quaker overseers, elders and neighbors). John Bevan, Ellis Pugh, Rowland Ellis, Cadd. Morgan, Hugh Griffith, Robert Jones, Thomas Evan, Robert David, John Cadd. John Robert, Thomas Jones, Rowland Richard, Richard Jones, Evan Owen, Robert Ellis, John Owen, Richard Wallter. Col 3 (female relatives ?). Ellin Jones, Ann Lewis, Ann Jones, Margeret William, Catherin Jones, Jane Evan, Jane Thomas, Sidney Rees, Mary Evan, Gainor Robert, Margeret Ellis, Sarah Evan, Catherin Pugh, Hannah Jones.

Children per Gwynedd MM Birth Records: David b. 5th mo. (July)-13-1704; Rowland b. 9th mo. (Nov)-28-1706; Ellis b. 5th mo. (July)-4-1708

From an analysis of marriage certificates, it appears Hugh Roberts may be a cousin of Alexander Edwards or his wife Margaret (who may have been from Montgomeryshire, not Merionethshire in Wales). Hugh Roberts signs the marriage certificates of Alexander Edwards Jr. and Bridget Edwards (both children of Alexander and Margaret) in the column of male relatives. The marriage of Bridget (to Griffith Miles) occurs before the settlement of Gwynedd in 1698:  Griffith Miles m. Bridget Edwards d/o Alexander (not yet of Montgomery - JQ) at the home of David Price at Radnor, 20, 8th mo., 1692. Col. 1: Jame Milles, Alexand Edward, Samuel Milles, Richard Milles, John Jarman, John Hastings, John Morgan, David Meredith, David Price, Jame Pugh, Hugh Robt, Rees Thomas, Ellis Pugh. Col 2: Margaret Edwards, Jane Edwards, Martha Edwards, Ann Davis, Marget Mille, Ellizebeth Evans, Phebe Stephen, Mary Merdith, Katherin Griffith, Sinai Pugh, Margaret Edwards; Col. 3: William David, Ellis Pugh, Tho: Jones, Hugh Robt, Rees Thomas, Howell James, Jon Evans, David Evans, Owen Morgan. -- Note besides a Hugh Roberts in the column of male relatives (1) there is also a Hugh Robert in column 3 (Quaker elders) who is probably the well known Quaker minister (whose diary and genealogy is in T.A. Glenn's Merion in the Welsh Tract).

The analysis of the relationships is made difficult in that the ancestry of both Ann Thomas and Hugh Robert are unknown. Thomas David is a good candidate for the father of Ann Thomas as he signs her marriage certificate first. Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas David, died 8 Mo. 12, 1685 in Merion, and would be a candidate for her mother. Thomas David was a first purchaser in Merion and about 1682-3, he located in Upper Merion. Thomas Allen Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, Vol 1., p. 156) has little to say about Thomas David, other than "probably of near Bala, Merionethshire. Removed to Merion, Penna., before 1692." He was a Friend.

Griffith John or his deceased wife may be in some way related to one of them, since he and his two sons sign in the male relatives column. There also appears to be some relationship to the John ap Thomas family (one of the original purchasers of Merion township, and an influential man in Merioneth, Wales).

Hugh Roberts died in 1716 and was buried at Gwynedd Meeting. He was apparently living in Upper Dublin township at the time of his death as the Gwynedd burial book says he is "of Dublin."

It seems likely that Hugh Roberts' wife Ann left a will dated 1745:

ANN ROBERTS, Philadelphia County. Widow. 6 mo. 12, 1745. March 28, 1746. H.119. Children: Ellis and Daniel (Executors), and Elizabeth (Thomas). Wit: Thomas Foulke and John Evans. [Thomas Foulke as witness, makes me think she is part of the Gwynedd community].

In 1746, at Gwynedd Meeting a Daniel is married with a probable brother Ellis (matching the will of Ann Roberts above - the Evan Thomas signing Daniel's wedding certificate married Daniel's sister Elizabeth - Gwynedd MM record 1740-10-30, Evan Thomas and Elizabeth Roberts reported married)

abstract of Gwynedd MM marriage certificate:  Daniel Roberts of Upper Dublin married Mary Nanney 10th day, 4th mo, 1746, at Gwynedd. Col 1: Reise Nanney, Ellis Roberts, Abram Naney, Isaac Nanna, Jacob Nanna, William Nanna, Grace Trump, John Easburn, Anne Jones, Evan Thomas. Col 2: Thos Foulk, John Jones, Hugh Griffith, Geo Lewis, Row Hughs, Ellin Hugh, Isaac Jones. Col 3: Gwen Foulk, Alice Griffith, Mary Evans, Jane Jones, Hannah Evans, Gainor Jones.

Daniel and Mary removed to Haverford Monthly Meeting's territory: Gwynedd MM page 363-1 1746/7-11-27 Daniel and wife granted certificate to Haverford MM

That leaves us with an unaccounted Ellis Roberts (brother of Daniel and Elizabeth) and there is a candidate in the Abington MM records:

Abington MM: Ellis provided a certificate from Gwynedd to marry 1735-3-26
Abington MM: Ellis received on certificate from Haverfordd MM with wife 1746-2-28
Abington MM: Ellis disowned 1752-11-27

We suspect this is the Ellis Roberts who married Martha Cadwallader.

This Hugh Roberts family lives in Upper Dublin near the borders of the territories of Gwynedd, Abington and Horsham Meetings instead of in Gwynedd township proper. On the 1734 Philadelphia County tax list is David Roberts, 200 acres (one of the children named in the Gwynedd MM birth records for Hugh and Ann Roberts) and Daniel's marriage certificate also says he is of Upper Dublin.
